Nikon-Walkley Australian Press Photographer Of The Year
The Nikon-Walkley Australian Press Photographer of the Year, or Nikon-Walkley Press Photographer of the Year is awarded to the photographer whose body of work is considered the best in the country for that year. It recognises newsworthiness, impact, technical superiority, creativity and originality in news photography. The annual Nikon-Walkley Photographic Awards are the highest honour for Australian press photographers. They represent the pinnacle of achievement and are judged by a panel of senior photographers and picture editors across the industry. It was first awarded in 1969 as a separate award, but in 2000 merged with the Walkley Awards to create the current prize. Walkley Awards
The annual Walkley Awards are presented in Australia to recognise and reward excellence in journalism. They cover all media including print, television, documentary, radio, photographic and online media. The Gold Walkley is the highest prize and is chosen from all category winners. The awards are under the administration of the Walkley Foundation for Journalism. The Nikon Photography Prizes are also awarded by the Walkley Foundation at the awards ceremony, on behalf of Nikon. History The awards were instituted in five categories in 1956 by businessman Sir William Walkley, founder of Ampol. After his death, the awards were handled by the Australian Journalists' Association which, in 1992, was merged into the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance. Jack Atley
Jack Atley is an Australian photographer. Life Atley is a self taught photographer, teaching himself how to develop and print photography as a child. Atley starting shooting photos professionally in 1987 after winning a cadetship for the Sydney Morning Herald, selected as one of two people out of 2000 applications. In his second year he won Australian Sports Photographer of the Year After moving back to Melbourne and working with the Melbourne Age, Atley was the overall individual winner of Nikon-Walkley Australian Press Photographer of the Year in 1995, and in 2008 he was named as the runner up winner in Australia's richest Photographic/Art Portraiture Award - The Moran Portraiture Prize. In 2010 he was listed as a top ten finalist in the Sony World Photography Competition judged out of 37,617 entries. Kate Geraghty
Kate Geraghty (born 1972) is an Australian war photographer, and photojournalist for ''The Sydney Morning Herald'', and ''The Age'' and five time Walkley winner. Career Geraghty started photographing professionally at Albury-Wodonga's ''The Border Mail'' in 1997, and photographing sport was formative; on one occasion she counted twenty-seven of her own pictures in one Monday-morning edition, a large number of them pictures of local sporting competitions that typically required her on any Saturday to cover "half a quarter of an AFL match, driving 100 kilometres to make the second half of a hockey match ... you'd cover at least seven games in the one day." When the newspaper refused to send her to East Timor to record the 1999 crisis, she took her holiday there to take photographs that were then published. Adam Pretty
Adam Pretty is a professional sports photographer from Sydney, Australia. Pretty grew up in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and attended Sydney Boys High School where his interest in photography started and he developed his first skills in using a camera. After school Pretty worked as a freelance photographer and began his career by finally landing his first job with the Sydney Morning Herald in 1997. His desire to specialise in sport led to him joining Allsport (now Getty Images) in 1998, where he is still working. Pretty was one of the key photographers for Getty Images during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
