Nikolaus Knüpfer
Nikolaus Knüpfer (1609 – 15 October 1655) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Biography Knüpfer was trained in Leipzig, where according to Houbraken he was apprenticed to Emanuel Nysen. He then moved to Magdeburg where he found work making brushes for artists. He stayed there until 1630, and then moved to Utrecht to work with Abraham Bloemaert. He lived with him for two years and then established his own studio in Utrecht, where in 1637 he became a ''visiting member'' of the Guild of St. Luke. He worked on the decorations of the castle Kronborg in Denmark, and painted figures in the landscapes of Jan Both and Jan Baptist Weenix. Pieter De Jode II
Pieter de Jode II or Pieter de Jode the Younger (1606–1674) was a Flemish Baroque printmaker, draughtsman, painter and art dealer. A scion of an important dynasty of printmakers active in Antwerp, he created many prints after the works of leading painters and was a close collaborator of Anthony van Dyck for whom he engraved many portraits.Christine van Mulders. Ary De Vois
Ary de Vois (1632-1635 – July 1680) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Biography Ary de Vois was born and died in Leiden. He was the son of Alewijn de Vois from Utrecht, who was organist in the Pieterskerk, Leiden, in 1635. Ary became a pupil in Utrecht of Nikolaus Knüpfer, who also taught Jan Steen. Ary then returned to Leiden to study with Abraham van den Tempel, who lived there between 1648 and 1660. De Vois joined the Leiden Guild of St Luke on 16 October 1653, paying dues until 1677. He was dean in 1662-64, headman in 1664-65 and dean again from 1667-68. He married Maria van der Vecht, on 5 February 1656. According to Houbraken his marriage caused a lull in his production, especially when he moved to Warmond where he took up fishing as a hobby. Filippo Baldinucci's ''Notizie de' Professori del Disegno, Da Cimabue in qua, Secolo V. dal 1610. al 1670. Distinto in Decennali'' (or ''Notice of the Professors of Design, from Cimabue to now, from 1610–1670'') was a major art biography of Baroque painters. Written by the erudite Florence, Florentine professor of the ''Accademia della Crusca'', it is often verbose and rife with factual errors; however, it is a broad compendium of stories about generally contemporaneous Baroque painters. Dozens of Flemish and Dutch painters, including Rembrandt, were judged to merit inclusion. Though Baldinucci may have met some of these Northern painters on their travels to Italy, the majority of the Dutch and Flemish names he included had biographical notes under portraits engraved by Jan Meyssens, whose work was popular, and whose engravings were reused by Cornelis de Bie for his 1682 book ''Het Gulden Cabinet''. Filippo Baldinucci
Filippo Baldinucci (3 June 1625 – 10 January 1696) was an Italian art historian and biographer. Life Baldinucci is considered among the most significant Florentine biographers/historians of the artists and the arts of the Baroque period. Patronised by the Medici, he aspired to become the new Vasari by renewing and expanding his biographies of artists, to which Baldinucci added lives of French and Flemish artists omitted by Vasari. His most important work was this biographical dictionary of artists, ''Notizie de' professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua'', of which the publication began in 1681 and continued after his death. His biography of Gian Lorenzo Bernini was published in 1682. Baldinucci came from a prominent and wealthy family of the Florentine merchant elite. As well as writing he drew portraits in chalk and modeled in clay; many of his deft and lively chalk portraits of friends are in the collection of the Uffizi. Cornelis De Bie
Cornelis de Bie (10 February 1627 – ) was a Flemish '' rederijker'', poet, jurist and minor politician from Lier. He is the author of about 64 works, mostly comedies. He is known internationally today for his biographical sketches of Flemish and Dutch painters in his ''Het Gulden Cabinet der Edel Vry Schilderconst'' (the Golden Cabinet of the Honourable Free Art of Painting), first printed in 1662. Biography He was the son of the painter Adriaan de Bie and member of the Chamber of Rhetoric in Lier known as ''den Groeyenden Boom''. After his study at the propedeuse faculty of Arts at the University of Leuven, he returned to Lier where he became a notary and bookseller. He was married twice: the first time to Elisabeth Smits who died in 1662 and the second time to Isabella Caelheyt who died in 1706. He had eight children, four from each wife. Museum Bredius is a museum named after Abraham Bredius on the Lange Vijverberg in The Hague. It is remarkable for its collection of etchings and paintings, but is most attractive to visitors for its accurate restoration of the 18th-century ''Herenhuis'' interior with period furnishings. ''Tobias and Sarah in Prayer with the Angel Raphael and the Demon'' (circa 1660) is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Jan Steen. It is now in the collection of the Bredius Museum, The Hague. The painting shows Tobias and Sarah praying while the Angel Raphael binds the demon. This painting, which was restored in 1996 by rejoining Abraham Bredius's angel half with the marriage bed half formerly owned by the Jewish refugee Jacques Goudstikker, was the subject of a dispute about nazi plunder. The Goudstikker half was restituted after it had already been rejoined and thus the dispute could only be resolved by one party buying the other half. It is unknown what specific amount was paid to Marei von Saher, the Goudstikker heir, but the purchase was only finalized in 2011. Zerubbabel Before Darius
''Zerubbabel Before Darius'' is an oil on oak panel painting by Nikolaus Knüpfer, now in the Hermitage Museum, in Saint Petersburg (inv. GE-6980). It was dated to after 1644 by Jo Saxton, a date also accepted by the work's owner. The work is signed at the foot of the throne on the left hand side. The frame is significantly damaged and the bottom right of the panel is chipped away. It illustrates the 'Darius contest', an episode in 1 Esdras (3:4 to 4:63) in which Darius's bodyguards debated what was the strongest thing in existence. One spoke argued it to be wine and another that it was the king, but Darius judged the competition won by Zerubbabel, who argued "Women are strongest, but above all things truth is victor". It has previously been mistitled ''The Story of Artaxerxes'', ''Daniel Defending Susanna from Slander'' and ''Allegory of Justice'', with Kuznetsov restoring the present title in 1974, though Dutch writers now referring to it as ''Zerubbabel Asking Darius's Permi ... Sophonisba
Sophonisba (in Punic, 𐤑𐤐𐤍𐤁𐤏𐤋 Ṣap̄anbaʿal) (fl. 203 BC) was a Carthaginian noblewoman who lived during the Second Punic War, and the daughter of Hasdrubal Gisco. She held influence over the Numidian political landscape, convincing king Syphax to change sides during the war, and later, in an act that became legendary, she poisoned herself rather than be humiliated in a Roman triumph. Name The form of the name Sophonisba is not known until the fifteenth century, in a few late manuscripts of Livy, but it is the better known form because of later literature. She is also called Sophonisbe and Sophoniba. However, her true name might be unclear. Her story is told in Livy (30.12.11–15.11), Diodorus (27.7), Appian (Pun. 27–28), and Cassius Dio (Zonaras 9.11), but Polybius, who had met Masinissa, never refers to Sophonisba by name in his allusions to her (14.4ff.).
