Nikolai Litus
Nikolai Gnatovich Litus (Ukrainian: Літус Микола Гнатович; 15 January 1925 – 21 February 2022) was a Ukrainian film director. He was a Merited Artist of Ukraine. Life and career Born in Tsybuliv, a village in the Uman Raion district, after graduating from the Leningrad Infantry School he fought in the Eastern Front of World War II. After the war he graduated in history at the Kirov Pedagogical Institute (today Vyatka State University), and later studied directing at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and worked as an assistant of Alexander Zarkhi. The feature film debut he co-directed with Shamsi Kiamov, ''Moi Drug Navrusov'' ("My Friend Navrusov") was censored and never screened because of its criticism of Soviet bureaucracy. He later directed documentaries and some popular films for Dovzhenko Film Studios, notably the 1963 comedy ''Queen of the Gas Station''. Tsybuliv () is an urban-type settlement in Uman Raion, Cherkasy Oblast, central Ukraine. The Dovzhenko Film Studios ( uk, Національна кіностудія художніх фільмів імені О. Довженка, translit. ''Natsional'na kinostudiya khudozhnikh filmiv imeni O. Dovzhenka'') is a former Soviet film production studio in Ukraine that was named after the Soviet film producer, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, in 1957. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the studio became a property of the government of Ukraine. In 2000 the film studio was awarded national status. History The studios began in 1920s when the All-Ukrainian Photo-Cinema-Directorate (VUFKU) announced a project proposition for the construction of a cinema factory in 1925. Queen of the Gas Station (russian: Королева бензоколонки, Koroleva benzkolonki) is a 1963 Soviet comedy film directed by Olexiy Myshurin and Nikolai Litus. The events of the movie revolve around a gas station on a highway between Kyiv and Kharkiv, filmed in Pyriatyn, Poltava Oblast. Plot Poltava resident Lyudmyla Dobryvechir tries become an announcer on television but does not pass the audition because of her terrible diction. She dreams of becoming a flight attendant on the Tu-104 — but this also does not come to pass. Now Lyudmyla is once again preparing to enter the ensemble "Ballet on Ice". She compensates the lack of ice with training on roller skates and temporarily finds work as a tanker at a gas station. Not everything works out for the new worker, but cheerful disposition and resourcefulness help her not only to master a new specialty, but also radically rebuild the industry of the entire gas station.
