Niko Nawaikula
Niko Nawaikula (born 16 August 1960) also known as Nikolau Tuiqamea, is a Fijian lawyer, and a former member of the Parliament of Fiji. He is a member of the Social Democratic Liberal Party. In May 2022 he was convicted of giving false information and obtaining a financial advantage and sentenced to three years imprisonment. Early life Nawaikula is from Buca, Natewa, in Cakaudrove Province. He qualified as a lawyer at the University of Tasmania in 1985, and has specialized in laws related to native land and indigenous people. A strong supporter of conservative family values, he said that parents should take their children's upbringing and education seriously. After the 2006 Fijian coup d'état, Nawaikula returned to his private practice as a lawyer and continued to involve himself with issues affecting indigenous Fijians. Cakaudrove West (Fijian Communal Constituency, Fiji)
Cakaudrove West Fijian Provincial Communal is a former electoral division of Fiji, one of 23 communal constituencies reserved for Fijians, indigenous Fijians. The United Fiji Party ( fj, Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, SDL) was a political party in Fiji. It was founded in 2001 by Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase as a power base; it absorbed most of the Christian Democratic Alliance and other conservative groups, and its endorsement by the Great Council of Chiefs ''(Bose Levu Vakaturaga)'' caused it to be widely seen as the successor to the Alliance Party, the former ruling party that had dominated Fijian politics from the 1960s to the 1980s. It drew its support mainly from indigenous Fijiians. The party was led in Parliament by Prime Minister Qarase. 2022 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji on 14 December 2022 to elect the 55 members of Parliament. The elections took place following the passage of controversial electoral amendments. In addition to a struggling economy, significant campaign issues included the national debt, ethnic tensions and tackling poverty. During the preliminary count, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) app displaying the results experienced a glitch, prompting FEO to take down the app temporarily. Once the app was back in operation, the vote tally showed the ruling FijiFirst party leading, resulting in five opposition parties demanding a recount and for the counting process to cease. Observers said they had not seen any significant voting irregularities, adding that an initial anomaly with an app showing the results had been rectified. Kamal Kumar is a Fijian jurist who served as Chief Justice of Fiji from 2019 to 2023. Kumar was educated at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, graduating with a bachelor of laws. he worked as a lawyer in Australia, and then in Fiji, before being appointed to the High Court of Fiji civil division in 2013. From September 2018 he served as the head of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, and he served as a president of Dakshina India Andhra Sangam Fiji of Lautoka Branch for two consecutive term until 2012. 2018 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji on 14 November 2018. The result was a victory for the ruling FijiFirst party of Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, which received just over 50% of the vote and 27 of the 51 seats in Parliament, a loss of five seats. The main opposition party, Social Democratic Liberal Party, gained six seats, whilst the National Federation Party retained its three seats. The elections also saw female representation in Parliament rise to nearly 20 percent, with 10 of the 51 members being women.
