Niki Erlenmeyer-Kimling
Niki Erlenmeyer-Kimling (April 18, 1932 – February 16, 2021) was a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University and chief of the Division of Genetics at New York State Psychiatric Institute. Research Her research interests included genetic aspects of mental disorders (mainly schizophrenia) and human behavior genetics generally. She conducted a longitudinal, prospective study of early indicators of later schizophrenia and a genetic-linkage, gene search study of schizophrenia in Croatia. Schizophrenia Researchers
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by continuous or relapsing episodes of psychosis. Major symptoms include hallucinations (typically hearing voices), delusions, and disorganized thinking. Other symptoms include social withdrawal, decreased emotional expression, and apathy. Symptoms typically develop gradually, begin during young adulthood, and in many cases never become resolved. There is no objective diagnostic test; diagnosis is based on observed behavior, a history that includes the person's reported experiences, and reports of others familiar with the person. To be diagnosed with schizophrenia, symptoms and functional impairment need to be present for six months (DSM-5) or one month (ICD-11). The International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (ISPG) is a learned society that aims to "promote and facilitate research in the Psychiatric genetics, genetics of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders and allied traits".
