Aarne Ilmari Niemelä (16 September 1907 – 12 November 1975) was a Finnish chess player, Finnish Chess Championship winner (1948). Biography From the late 1940s to the late 1960s, Aarne Ilmari Niemelä was one of Finland's leading chess players. In Finnish Chess Championships he has won gold (1948) and three bronze (1956, 1959, 1962) medals. Aarne Ilmari Niemelä two times participated in FIDE European Zonal tournaments (1957, 1961). In 1959, he participated in International Chess tournament in Riga where ranked 12th place. Artturi Antero Niemelä (23 August 1923 – 11 April 2021) was a Finnish homesteader and politician. Virpi Sinikka Niemelä ( Helsinki, 26 December 1936 – Argentina, 18 December 2006) was a leading Finnish Argentine astronomer. She was the second Argentine to be elected for Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society. Born in Finland, she emigrated with her family to Argentina in 1954 where she lived for the majority of her life. She became a citizen, married and had two sons. Education She started university at the National University of La Plata to study chemistry, but decided on astronomy through the then Astronomy and Geophysics School. She received her doctorate for research done under Jorge Sahade, with whom she collaborated throughout her career. Career Her work has had a strong influence in the areas of massive stars and close binaries, especially Wolf-Rayet stars. She pioneered work on Wolf-Rayet stars in the Magellanic Clouds, massive stars in stellar associations and interstellar bubbles around massive stars. Markus Niemelä (born 20 March 1984 in Rauma, Finland, Rauma) is a Finland, Finnish former race car driver. He was the 2008 series champion after winning the final round at Road Atlanta. His international racing career has been volatile due to a number of injuries he has sustained during his career.
