Nielsine Nielsen
Nielsine Nielsen (10 June 1850 – 8 October 1916) was the first female academic and physician in Denmark. She graduated in 1885 and in 1889 she established her own medical practice and worked as a general practitioner. She was active in the gender equality movement through her work in Danish Women's Society. Early life Her parents were the well off shipowner Lars Nielsen (1808–86) and Karen Jensen (1811–82). She was raised in Svendborg. During her childhood, her brother and sister died of typhoid, which is said to have affected her interest in medicine. Career In 1868, she supported herself as a teacher at the Frøknerne Villemoes-Qvistgaards Institut in Copenhagen and worked as a governess in the provinces a couple of years. The ''Dictionary of New Zealand Biography'' (DNZB) is an encyclopedia or biographical dictionary containing biographies of over 3,000 deceased New Zealanders. It was first published as a series of print volumes from 1990 to 2000, went online in 2002, and is now a part of '' Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand''. The dictionary superseded ''An Encyclopaedia of New Zealand'' of 1966, which had 900 biographies. The dictionary is managed by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage of the New Zealand Government. An earlier work of the same name in two volumes containing 2,250 entries, published in 1940 by Guy Scholefield with government assistance, is unrelated. Overview Work on the current version of the DNZB was started in 1983 under the editorship of W. H. Oliver. The first volume covered the period 1769–1869 and was published in 1990. Nielsine Petersen
Nielsine Petersen (10 July 1851 – 26 November 1916) was a Danish sculptor. Biography Nielsine Caroline Petersen was born at Nyrup in the parish Højby on the island of Zealand, Denmark. She was the daughter of Mads Petersen (1875-1884) and Kirstine born Madsen (1826-c. 1885). She came to Copenhagen and visited Vilhelm Kyhn's drawing school, after which she became a student of August Saabye. She exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1880 and won the Neuhausen Prize in 1883. In 1889 she received the Academy's travel scholarship and then studied in Paris. In 1893 she won the Eibeschütz Prize for the statue ''Ismail''. She was awarded the Ingenio et arti medal in 1908. In 1901 she was invited on an eleven day visit to Buckingham Palace by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of Denmark.
