Nicosia Municipal Theater
Nicosia Municipal Theater ( tr, Lefkoşa Belediye Tiyatrosu) is a prominent theatrical organization in Northern Cyprus. Headquartered in North Nicosia, it is organized under the Nicosia Turkish Municipality. It was founded in 1980. The establishment was prompted by the firing of a leading group of actors, including Yaşar Ersoy and Osman Alkaş, following a politically sensitive play that was staged in the wake of the 1980 Turkish coup d'état in the first culture and arts festival in North Nicosia. Despite the limited budget of the municipality, Mustafa Akıncı, the mayor at the time, put effort to provide for the theater. Despite its starts in harsh conditions and unkempt buildings, the theater grew to become an influential part of the Turkish Cypriot society. North Nicosia or Northern Nicosia ( tr, Kuzey Lefkoşa ; el, Βόρεια Λευκωσία) is the capital and largest city of the ''de facto'' state of Northern Cyprus. Nicosia Turkish Municipality
Nicosia Turkish Cypriot Municipality ( tr, Lefkoşa Türk Belediyesi) is the governing body of North Nicosia province of TRNC. Osman Alkaş (born 3 November 1955) is a Turkish Cypriot actor. He is one of the founders of Nicosia Municipal Theater and he is still active in this theater. He was involved in the production of ''Torba'', a popular program among the Turkish Cypriot people, and was featured in the film '' Gölgeler ve Suretler'' and the TV series '' Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman ki''. He then acted in the films '' Uzun Hikaye'', '' Hükümet Kadın 2'', ''Sarmaşık'', etc. He was particularly praised for his role in the film ''Sarmaşık''. The 1980 Turkish coup d'état ( tr, 12 Eylül Darbesi), headed by Chief of the General Staff General Kenan Evren, was the third coup d'état in the history of the Republic of Turkey, the previous having been the 1960 coup and the 1971 coup by memorandum. During the Cold War era, Turkey saw political violence (1976–1980) between far-left, far-right (Grey Wolves), Islamist militant groups, and the state. Mustafa Akıncı
Mustafa Akıncı (; born 28 December 1947) is a Turkish Cypriot politician who was the president of Northern Cyprus from April 2015 until October 2020. An architect by profession, Akıncı in 1976 became the first elected mayor of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality in Northern Cyprus, at the age of 28. He defeated a candidate endorsed by President Rauf Denktaş as the candidate of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP). He held this position for an uninterrupted term of 14 years until 1990, leading several projects for the city that won him international awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and collaborating with his Greek Cypriot counterpart. Near East University (NEU; tr, Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, commonly referred to as YDÜ) is a private university located in North Cyprus. It was founded in North Nicosia in 1988, by Suat Günsel, a Turkish Cypriot who is the 100% owner of NEU. The chairman of the board of trustees is his son, Irfan Günsel. Nicosia Municipal Orchestra
Nicosia Municipal Orchestra ( tr, Lefkoşa Belediye Orkestrası) is an orchestra based in North Nicosia operated by the Nicosia Turkish Municipality. As of 2014, it was the largest orchestra in Northern Cyprus. It was established in 1987, under the administration of the mayor Mustafa Akıncı. The project stagnated for some years due to financial difficulties, but its official establishment was realized in 1991. During Şemi Bora's term as mayor, the orchestra developed to incorporate a large number of musicians, educate new musicians in Nicosia, give concerts in parks, squares and public squares and organize the Light Music Composition Contest, which it annually organizes to this date.
