Nicolás Salzillo
Nicolás Salzillo (born Nicola Salzillo; Santa Maria Capua Vetere, July 13, 1672 - Murcia, October 6, 1727) was an Italian sculptor who from 1699, aged 27, was active in Murcia, Spain. He worked mostly in life-size painted wooden religious sculpture. His son, Francisco Salzillo, was an even more prominent baroque wood sculptor. Santa Maria Capua Vetere
Santa Maria Capua Vetere ( nap, Santa Maria 'e Capua) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Caserta, part of the region of Campania (southern Italy). Though it is not connected with the ''Civitas Capuana'', the town is a medieval place and its proximity to the Roman amphitheatre led the inhabitants to change its name in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, where ''Capua Vetere'' means ''Old Capua''. History In the area several settlements of the Villanovan culture were present in pre-historical times, and these were probably enlarged by the Oscans and Etruscans. In the 4th century BCE ''Capuae'' was the largest city in Italy after Rome. The city was damaged by Vandal ravages but later recovered and became the seat of an independent Lombard principate. Murcia (, , ) is a city in south-eastern Spain, the capital and most populous city of the autonomous community of the Region of Murcia, and the seventh largest city in the country. Francisco Salzillo
Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz (12 May 1707 – 2 March 1783Malgares Guerrero, José Antonio. XXII Jornadas de Patrimonio Cultural de la Región de Murcia (Spanish). 2011, p. 418. ) was a Spanish sculptor. He is the most representative Spanish image-maker of the 18th century and one of greatest of the Baroque. Francisco Salzillo worked exclusively on religious themes, and almost always in polychromed wood. He made hundreds of pieces that are distributed throughout the Region of Murcia and some in bordering provinces. The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) caused the destruction of many of the works of Salzillo. Some of his masterpieces include his nonprocessional religious work, his processional work, and his great Nativity scene.
