Nicole Seah
Nicole Rebecca Seah Xue Ling (; born 17 October 1986) is a Singaporean politician. A member of the opposition Workers' Party (WP), she contested in the 2020 general election but lost by a close margin to the governing People's Action Party (PAP). Seah rose to prominence as a candidate representing the National Solidarity Party (NSP) in Marine Parade GRC in the 2011 general election. At the age of 24, she was the youngest female candidate standing in the election, and immediately became a target of media attention, which became increasingly pronounced as her speeches began to go viral on YouTube. During the election, her number of social media followers rendered her being described as the second most popular Singaporean politician online after Lee Kuan Yew. On 29 August 2014, Seah resigned from the NSP, "to move on and grow in other areas." The National Solidarity Party (abbreviation: NSP) is a political party in Singapore. History Beginnings The NSP was founded by a group of middle-class businessmen and women on 6 March 1987. The founding president and secretary-general of the party were Kum Teng Hock and Soon Kia Seng respectively. Kum was a former member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) while Soon was the ex-chairman of the Singapore Democratic Party. According to its 1995 manifesto, the main political objective of the NSP was to organise and maintain a democratic movement that would ensure the solidarity and establishment of a just political system and standard of living. Adrian Tan Cheng Bock ( zh, s=陈清木, p=Chén Qīngmù; born 26 April 1940) is a Singaporean politician and medical practitioner. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayer Rajah SMC between 1980 and 2001. He served as Secretary-General of Progress Singapore Party (PSP) between 2019 to 2021 and served as Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Chairman since 2021. Early life Tan was born on 26 April 1940 in Singapore. He came from a Hokkien-speaking family. Tan attended Radin Mas Primary School and Raffles Institution (RI). Tony Tan Keng Yam (; born 7 February 1940) is a Singaporean former politician who served as the seventh president of Singapore between 2011 and 2017. He did not seek for a second term as president in 2017 due to a constitutional amendment. Prior to entering politics, Tan was a general manager at OCBC Bank. He made his political debut in the 1979 by-elections as a PAP candidate contesting in Sembawang SMC and won. Tan Jee Say (; born 12 February 1954) is a Singaporean politician and former civil servant who stood for the 2011 presidential election. He also founded the defunct political party, Singaporeans First. Education Tan graduated from University College, Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) under the Government Overseas Merit Scholarship. Career Tan had worked in the Civil Service for 11 years, including six years in the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) from 1979 to 1985, before leaving as Deputy Director for Economic and Manpower Planning. A by-election for the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in Singapore was held on 19 December 1992. The People's Action Party (PAP) defeated the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), the Singapore Justice Party (SJP) and the National Solidarity Party (NSP) with 72.9% of the valid votes. The team of candidates from the People's Action Party (PAP) were subsequently declared as the MPs for Marine Parade GRC. This by-election also marked the first (and the sole instance as of 2022) time in the history of Singapore, where an incumbent Prime Minister vacated his seat to face a by-election.(Lee Kuan Yew also vacated his seat in Tanjong Pagar to face a by-election 35 years back, though he was Leader of the Opposition at the time).
