Nicolai A. Grevstad
Nicolai Andreas Grevstad (June 2, 1851 – February 20, 1940) was an American diplomat, politician and newspaper editor. Background Nicolai Andreas Grevstad was born in Sunnmøre, the southernmost traditional district of the western Norwegian county of Møre og Romsdal. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Christiania in 1878. In 1880 he became editor of ''Dagbladet'', Norway's third largest newspaper. Founded in 1869, the newspaper was affiliated with the Liberal Party of Norway (Norwegian: ''Venstre''). A split in the party caused the dismissal of Grevstad in 1883 because of his somewhat pronounced radical political positions. Career Grevstad subsequently emigrated to the United States and soon became editor of ''Nordvesten'', a Norwegian language newspaper published in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sunnmøre
Sunnmøre (, en, South- Møre) is the southernmost traditional district of the western Norwegian county of Møre og Romsdal. Its main city is Ålesund. The region comprises the municipalities ( no, kommuner) of Giske, Hareid, Herøy, Norddal, Sande, Skodje, Haram, Stordal, Stranda, Sula, Sykkylven, Ulstein, Vanylven, Volda, Ørskog, Ørsta, and Ålesund. Though it is one of the three traditional districts in Møre og Romsdal, Sunnmøre is home to more than half the population of the county—with 141,755 residents, or about 54% of the population of the county. The district is made up of mainland as well as several large islands such as Gurskøy and Hareidlandet, plus many small islands. While Sunnmøre has no formal administration, many national organizations chose to have separate divisions for Sunnmøre. Reidar Rye Haugan (September 18, 1893 – October 1972) was an American newspaper editor and publisher. Background Reidar Rye Haugan was born the youngest of eight children born in Trondheim, Norway. Together with his mother and sister, Haugan immigrated to the United States at 21 years of age, arriving in New York City on April 3, 1915. Career Initially Haugan had worked for the editorial staff of the Norwegian language newspaper ''Skandinaven'' in Chicago. Dating from 1866, ''Skandinaven'' had once been the one of largest Norwegian language newspapers within the United States. In 1939, Haugan followed Nicolai A. Grevstad as editor of ''Skandinaven''. When ''Skandinaven'' suspended publication in 1941, Haugan established the Norwegian language newspaper ''Viking'' on which he served as both editor and publisher.
