Nicolaes Woutersz Van Der Meer
Nicolaes Woutersz van der Meer (1575 – 1666) was a Dutch brewer, magistrate and mayor of Haarlem, best known today for his portrait with its pendant of his wife Cornelia Claesdr Voogt, both painted by Frans Hals in 1631. Biography He was born in Haarlem as the son of Wouter Claes Woutersz and Maria Adriaensdr van der Meer. He was first called Nicolaes Woutersz and later added his mother's surname. In 1607 he became a member of the Haarlem regency. In 1619 he became a member of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, and in 1622 he became a representative to the States-General of the Netherlands for Haarlem. Though he is known for his wedding portrait with its pendant, Van der Meer was also portrayed as Captain of the St Jorisschutterij in Hals' ''The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Militia Company in 1616''. Nicolaes Witsen
Nicolaes Witsen (8 May 1641 – 10 August 1717; modern Dutch: ''Nicolaas Witsen'') was a Dutch statesman who was mayor of Amsterdam thirteen times, between 1682 and 1706. In 1693 he became administrator of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In 1689 he was extraordinary-ambassador to the English court and became Fellow of the Royal Society. In his free time, he was cartographer, maritime writer, and an authority on shipbuilding. His books on the subject are important sources on Dutch shipbuilding in the 17th century. Furthermore, he was an expert on Russian affairs. Nicolaes Visscher II (1649, Amsterdam – 1702, Amsterdam) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. He was the son of Nicolaes Visscher I Nicolaes Visscher I (25 January 1618, Amsterdam – buried 11 September 1679, Amsterdam) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. He was the son of Claes Janszoon Visscher. His son, Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702), also worked with him ... and the grandson of Claes Janszoon Visscher. Nicolaes Visscher I
Nicolaes Visscher I (25 January 1618, Amsterdam – buried 11 September 1679, Amsterdam) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. He was the son of Claes Janszoon Visscher. His son, Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702), also worked with him and continued the family tradition of mapmaking after his death. Visscher died in Amsterdam in 1679 and was buried in the Nieuwezijds Kapel on 11 September of that year, though a death year of 1709 is maintained by some sources. Nicolas Vallet
Nicolas Vallet (also ''Valet''; c. 1583 – c. 1642) was a French lutenist and composer who emigrated to the Dutch Republic. Vallet, a Huguenot, was born at Corbeny, Aisne, but fled around 1613 from France to the Netherlands for unknown reasons. In Amsterdam he worked as a self-supporting musician, lute teacher, and as the owner of a dance school. His primary work, ''Le Secret des Muses,'' contains compositions and instruction for the 10-course Renaissance lute. It was published in two parts in 1615 and 1616. It was among the last compositions to appear for this instrument, before it was supplanted by the Baroque lute. He also wrote a ''Psalms of David'' (in 1615) and ''Regia Pietas'' (in 1622). Nicolaes Tulp (9 October 1593 – 12 September 1674) was a Dutch surgeon and mayor of Amsterdam. Tulp was well known for his upstanding moral character and as the subject of Rembrandt's famous painting ''The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp''. Life Born Claes Pieterszoon, he was the son of a prosperous merchant active in civic affairs in Amsterdam. From 1611 to 1614 he studied medicine in Leiden. When he returned to Amsterdam he became a respected doctor and in 1617 he married Aagfe Van der Voegh. An ambitious young man, he adopted the tulip as his heraldric emblem and changed his name to Nicolaes (a more proper version of the name ''Claes'') Tulp. Nicolaes Roose
Nicolaas Liemaker, or ''de Liemaker'', ''de Liemaeckere, surnamed Roose'', or Nicolaes Roose (1601 – 1646), a Flemish historical painter, was born at Ghent in 1601. He was the son of Jacob De Liemaker, a painter upon glass, and is said by Descamps to have been a pupil of Markus Geeraerts the younger, but as the latter joined his father in London in 1580, it is most likely that he studied under Otto van Veen at Antwerp. He attained high rank in his profession, and in 1625 returned to Ghent, where he died in 1646. The Museum of Ghent and the churches of that city and of other towns of Flanders possess a great number of his works. His best picture is the 'Consecration of St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra,' which is above the high altar of the church of St. Nicholas at Ghent. Nicolas Pitau, or Pittou the Senior (13 May 1632 – 11 February 1671) was a Flemish-born French engraver and printmaker. Biography Born in Antwerp on 13 May 1632 Pitau began his training with his godfather Nicolaes Lauwers (1600–1652), and his brother Conrad Lauwers (1622–1675) in around 1650. In 1656 Pitau moved to Paris with Conrad, where he began producing etched plates after the work of Philippe de Champaigne. In 1666 he began to publish plates after the work of Gerard Edelinck.
