Nicolaas Marinus Hugenholtz
Nicolaas Marinus Hugenholtz (born 26 April 1924) is a Dutch physicist. He was a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Groningen between 1960 and 1989. Hugenholtz was born in Wormerveer. He studied physics at Leiden University and obtained his degree in 1948. Hugenholtz subsequently studied theoretical physics under Hans Kramers. He obtained his PhD in physics at Utrecht University in 1957 with a thesis titled: "The quantum theory of large systems and its application to the structure of nuclear matter". Wormerveer
Wormerveer is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad, and lies about 13 km northwest of Amsterdam. Wormerveer developed in the 15th century on the west bank of the Zaan river. It started to industrialise with windmills in the 17th century, however none of the windmills exist any more. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1639 to replace the medieval church which was destroyed in 1574 by Spanish troops. Wormerveer was a separate municipality until 1974, when it became a part of the new municipality of Zaanstad. Hendrik Anthony "Hans" Kramers (17 December 1894 – 24 April 1952) was a Dutch physicist who worked with Niels Bohr to understand how electromagnetic waves interact with matter and made important contributions to quantum mechanics and statistical physics. Background and education Hans Kramers was born on 17 December 1894 in Rotterdam. the son of Hendrik Kramers, a physician, and Jeanne Susanne Breukelman. In 1912 Hans finished secondary education ( HBS) in Rotterdam, and studied mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden, where he obtained a master's degree in 1916.
