Nick Cogley
Nickolas P. J. Cogley (May 4, 1869 – May 20, 1936) was an American actor, director and writer of the silent films. He appeared in more than 170 films between 1909 and 1934. Biography Cogley was born in New York, New York. He attended St. Francis Xavier College in New York. Cogley appeared in blackface in some of his roles. For example, in the Civil War film '' The Coward'' (1915) he played "A Negro Servant," and in '' Toby's Bow'' (1919) he portrayed the black servant "Uncle Toby" that gives the film its name. The use of blackface was not unusual in American silent films, and did not disappear until the 1930s when public sensibilities regarding race began to change and blackface became increasingly associated with racism and bigotry.John KenrickBlackface and Old Wounds Musicals101.com. ''Love, Loot and Crash'' is a 1915 American short comedy film. It features Harold Lloyd in an uncredited role. Plot Dora and her father are at a loss in the kitchen (they have just fired their cook). Their advertisement for a new cook in a newspaper attracts two crooks (one of which is Fritz Schade). He dresses like a woman to apply for the job. At his first opportunity he plans to loot the house. Dora's suitor, Harold passes her a note through the window, saying to come when he whistles. She goes upstairs to pack a bundle of clothes. A policeman calls at the kitchen door with a posy of flowers. The cook pours the cop a glass from a large jug. Father is suspicious when he hears Harold's whistle and goes to Dora's room. ''Tillie's Punctured Romance'' is a 1914 American silent comedy film directed by Mack Sennett and starring Marie Dressler, Mabel Normand, Charlie Chaplin, and the Keystone Kops. The picture was the only feature-length comedy made by the Keystone Film Company. At the time of production Marie Dressler was a major stage star, and in this film Chaplin and Normand support her as leads within Keystone's stock company of actors. The film is based on Dressler's stage play ''Tillie's Nightmare'' by A. Baldwin Sloane and Edgar Smith. ''Tillie's Punctured Romance'' is notable for being the last Chaplin film which he neither wrote nor directed, as well as the first feature-length slapstick comedy in all of cinema.
