Nicholson River (Queensland)
The Nicholson River is a river located in the Northern Territory and the state of Queensland, Australia. The location of the Aboriginal mission at Doomadgee was also historically referred to as Nicholson River in some sources. Course and features The headwaters of the river rise at the western end of China Wall on the Barkly Tableland, in the Northern Territory and head in a south easterly direction. The river then heads due east and crosses the border into the northwest region of Queensland near Nudjabarra across mostly uninhabited plains. It continues east across the Shadforth Plain and past the Aboriginal community of Doomadgee. The river then veers north near the Tiranna Roadhouse across Hann Crossing and past Escott, just west of Burketown where it is joined by its main tributary the Gregory River. Nicholson River (Victoria)
The Nicholson River is a perennial river of the Mitchell River catchment, located in the East Gippsland region of the Australian state of Victoria. Course and features The Nicholson River rises below the Angora Range in the lower reaches of the Victorian Alps within the Great Dividing Range, near the small settlement of Marthavale, west of . The river flows generally southeast passing through the small town of before entering Lake King, one of the main lakes in the extensive Gippsland Lakes system. Within the lake, the Nicholson River forms its confluence with the Mitchell River, which joins with the Tambo River; with the Mitchell River draining into Bass Strait southwest of , in the Shire of East Gippsland. The river descends over its course. The river is impounded by the Nicholson River Dam, that forms a water reservoir used for the supply of town water to Lakes Entrance, until 1995. Nicholson River (Western Australia)
The Nicholson River is a river in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It takes its name from the Nicholson Plains, named in 1879 by Alexander Forrest after Sir Charles Nicholson, the central figure in the circle of Australian 'colonists' in London, and a promoter of the Forrest brothers' explorations. In 1870 Nicholson had presented a paper entitled ''On Forrest's Expedition into the Interior of Western Australia, Goyder's Survey of the Neighbourhood of Port Darwin, and on the Recent Progress of Australian Discovery'' to a meeting of the Royal Geographical Society of London. The river rises just north of Koolerong Bore then flows south-west through Nicholson and through Marella Gorge then turning north and discharging into the Ord River on the eastern edge of Purnululu National Park near Doughboy Hill.
