Nicholas Lockyer (public Servant)
Sir Nicholas Colston Lockyer ISO (6 October 1855 – 26 August 1933) was a senior Australian public servant, best known for his time as head of the Department of Trade and Customs. Life and career Lockyer was born in Woolloomooloo, Sydney on 6 October 1855. His first marriage was to Mary Juliet, daughter of Geoffrey Eagar, from 1885 to her death in 1898. In 1901, he married Winifred, the daughter of Harry Wollaston Sir Harry Newton Phillips Wollaston (17 January 184611 February 1921) was a senior Australian public servant. Imperial Service Order
The Imperial Service Order was established by King Edward VII in August 1902. It was awarded on retirement to the administration and clerical staff of the Civil Service throughout the British Empire for long and meritorious service. Normally a person must have served for 25 years to become eligible, but this might be shortened to 16 years for those serving in unhealthy climates abroad. There is one class: Companion. Both men and women are eligible, and recipients of this order are entitled to use the post-nominal letters 'ISO'. History The new order was announced in the 1902 Coronation Honours list published on 26 June 1902, on the day scheduled for the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The Department of Trade and Customs was an Australian government department that existed between 1901 and 1956. It was one of the inaugural government departments of Australia established at federation. History The department was one of the first seven Commonwealth Government departments to be established in the Federation year, 1901. The first head of the department was Harry Wollaston, appointed in 1901. In that first year, Wollaston and Charles Kingston worked closely together in drafting legislation and the first Commonwealth customs tariff. Geoffrey Eagar
Geoffrey Eagar (17 December 1818 – 12 September 1891) was an accountant and colonial politician and civil servant in New South Wales, Australia. Early life Eagar was born in Sydney, son of Jemima McDuel and Edward, a lawyer, emancipated convict and merchant. Edward left Australia in 1821, while Geoffrey was still an infant, to take a legal battle over the rights of freed convicts to London, and did not return. His mother Jemima then married William Wentworth, and gave birth to a son. In 1843 he married Mary Ann Bucknell, and the couple had 4 children. Politics Eagar worked as an accountant at the Bank of New South Wales from 1854 for around five years before resigning to accept an appointment to the New South Wales Legislative Council in September 1859. The following month he was appointed Secretary for Public Works and Representative of the Government in the Legislative Council in the Forster ministry, serving until the ministry's defeat in March 1860.
