Nicholas Kendall (Conservative Politician)
Nicholas Kendall (22 December 1800 – 8 June 1878) was born in St Mabyn, Cornwall. Kendall was High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1847 and a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP). In 1858 he was chairman of the River Thames Select Committee during The Great Stink The son of a vicar, Nicholas Kendall was a member of a Cornish landowning family. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford. He was High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1847. In the same year he suppressed a riot at St Austell, on 11 June. He was returned to parliament for East Cornwall, in conjunction with Thomas Agar-Robartes, in 1852, which position he retained without intermission until 1868. William Pole-Carew
William Henry Pole-Carew (30 July 1811 – 20 January 1888) was a Cornish politician. Biography Pole-Carew was born in Eaton Place, Marylebone in 1811, the son of Reginald Pole-Carew and Hon. Caroline Anne Lyttelton, daughter of William Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton. His father was a paternal descendant of the Pole baronets, of Shute House. He was educated at Charterhouse School from 1824 to 1828, and then at Oriel College, Oxford, gaining a BA in 1833 and an MA in 1864. He served as Conservative Member of Parliament for East Cornwall from 1845 until 1852, and unsuccessfully contested Liskeard in 1859. He served as High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1854–1855, and as Recorder of East Looe from 1857 to 1886. Pole-Carew joined the Canterbury Association on 3 June 1848. He was friends with John Robert Godley, and the Godley family stayed with him at Antony House while awaiting departure of the ''Lady Nugent'' for Lyttelton. Sir John Salusbury Salusbury-Trelawny, 9th Baronet (2 June 1816 – 4 August 1885), was a British Liberal politician. Life Born at Harewood on 2 June 1816 to Patience Christian Carpenter and Sir William Salusbury-Trelawny, the 8th Baronet of Trelawny. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College. In 1824, Trelawny married Harriet Jane Tremayne, an author and the daughter of John Hearle Tremayne. In 1840, Trelawny was appointed Deputy-lieutenant of Cornwall and captain of the Cornwall Rangers; subsequently commanding the 2nd Cornwall Rifles Militia. In 1841 he was called to the bar, but never practiced and, in the same year, unsuccessfully contested Cornwall East Parliament Constituency as a Liberal. 1868 United Kingdom General Election
The 1868 United Kingdom general election was the first after passage of the Reform Act 1867, which enfranchised many male householders, thus greatly increasing the number of men who could vote in elections in the United Kingdom. It was the first election held in the United Kingdom in which more than a million votes were cast; nearly triple the number of votes were cast compared to the previous election of 1865. The result saw the Liberals, led by William Gladstone, again increase their majority over Benjamin Disraeli's Conservatives ( see 1865 election) to more than 100 seats. This was the last general election at which all the seats were taken by only the two leading parties, although the parties at the time were loose coalitions and party affiliation was not listed on registration papers.
