Nicholas Fairfax
Sir Nicholas Fairfax (1498/99 – 1571), of Gilling Castle and Walton, Yorkshire, was an English politician. He was born the eldest son of Sir Thomas Fairfax of Gilling Castle and educated at the Middle Temple. He succeeded his father in 1520 and was knighted before 1530. He was selected High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1531–32, 1544–1555 and 1561–62. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Scarborough in 1542 and for Yorkshire in 1547 and 1563. He died in 1571. He had married twice, firstly Jane, the daughter of Guy Palmes of Naburn, with whom he had at least 8 sons and at least 4 daughters and secondly Alice, the daughter of (Sir) John Harington of Exton, Rutland and the widow of Richard Flower of Whitwell, Rutland and of Sir Henry Sutton of Averham, Nottinghamshire. Gilling Castle
Gilling Castle is a Grade I listed country house near Gilling East, North Yorkshire, England (). History The castle was originally the home of the Etton family, who appeared there at the end of the 12th century. It was Thomas de Etton who built the fortified manor house in the 14th century – a large tower almost square, whose basement still forms the core of the present building. In 1349 his father had settled the manor of Gilling on his wife's family, the Fairfaxes, in the event of the failure of the Ettons to produce a male heir. Thus, Thomas Fairfax was able to claim the property in 1489, and it was his great-grandson, Sir William Fairfax, who succeeded in 1571, and undertook the rebuilding of the old 14th-century house. Building on top of the medieval walls and leaving the ground floor intact, he rebuilt the first and second floors, adding at the back (east) a staircase turret and an oriel window. Thomas Fairfax (Gilling)
Sir Thomas Fairfax ( – 1520) was an owner of Gilling Castle, near Gilling East, North Riding of Yorkshire, England. Sir Thomas Fairfax (father) Fairfax's father, also named Thomas, was presumably a supporter of the House of York in the Wars of the Roses. His original home was near the site of the Battle of Towton. Based on the 1349 marriage between Margaret de Etton and their ancestor, a third Thomas Fairfax of Walton, the elder Thomas Fairfax successfully claimed the ownership of the Gilling Estate during two inquisitions, the first of which was in 1489. The elder Thomas Fairfax married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Sherburne of Lancashire. Their son, the younger Thomas Fairfax, was the eldest of nine children; his brothers' names were Richard, Robert and John, and his sisters were Jane, Elizabeth, Isabel, Anne and Dorothy. William Fairfax (died 1597)
Sir William Fairfax (by 1531– 1 November 1597), of Gilling Castle and Walton, Yorkshire, was an English politician. He was the eldest son of Sir Nicholas Fairfax of Gilling, who he succeeded in 1571. He was knighted in 1560 and was a Justice of the Peace for Yorkshire from 1562 until his death. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Boroughbridge in 1558 and for Yorkshire in 1597. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1577–78 and a member of the Council in the North from 1577 to his death. He died in 1597 shortly after his election to Parliament. He had married twice; firstly Agnes, the daughter of George, Lord Darcy and secondly Jane, the daughter and heiress of Brian Stapleton of Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire.
