Niagara, British Columbia
Niagara is on the west side of the Granby River, near the junction with Fisherman Creek, in the Boundary Country region of south central British Columbia. The small community is about north of Grand Forks on North Fork Rd. Prosperity In 1898, a Spokane syndicate bought part of the "Gunnysack Jones" ranch, and laid out a townsite, in anticipation of the coming Columbia and Western Railway (C&W), which was acquired by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The source of the name is unclear, but could either be the Niagara Falls, or the USS Niagara, which served in the Spanish–American War that year. During the railway construction, a work camp was cut out of the mountainside for the nearby tunnel. The town experienced rapid growth and brief prosperity. Having 12 hotels at its peak, a stage coach ran daily to Grand Forks. Grand Forks, population 4,112, is a city in the Boundary Country of the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. It is located at the confluence of the Granby and Kettle Rivers, a tributary of the Columbia River. The third USS ''Niagara'' was a distilling and supply ship that served in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War. The Columbia and Western Railway (C&W) was a historic, and initially narrow gauge, railway in southern British Columbia. Heinze ownership Proposal & planning Fritz Augustus Heinze, who opened a smelter at Butte, Montana in 1893, was seeking investment opportunities. Attracted by the emerging mining boom on Red Mountain, Rossland, Heinze incorporated the British Columbia Smelting and Refining Company with a commitment to lay trackage between the mines and the Trail smelter. From the smelter, which opened in February 1896, boats could carry the metal concentrate to complete the purification at a refinery. However, his then competitor denied him access to rail transport downriver.
