Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory
Nhulunbuy () is a township that is the Northern Territory#Cities and towns, sixth largest population centre in the Northern Territory of Australia. Nhulunbuy was created on the Gove Peninsula in north-east Arnhem Land when a bauxite mine and a deep water port were established in the late 1960s, followed by an alumina refinery. The alumina refinery closed in May 2014, and Nhulunbuy was reduced by 700 to 3,240 by the time of the 2016 Australian census. The median age in the town was 32 in the 2016 census. Gove Airport (also known as Gove-Nhulunbuy Airport) is on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory of Australia. It services the mining town of Nhulunbuy and several Aboriginal communities including Yirrkala. The airport is located south southeast of the Nhulunbuy town centre, on Melville Road. It is operated by the Nhulunbuy Corporation. Airnorth operates daily scheduled services to and from Darwin and Cairns and once weekly services to Groote Eylandt. Yirrkala Bark Petitions
The Yirrkala bark petitions, sent by the Yolngu people, an Aboriginal Australian people of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, to the Australian Parliament in 1963, were the first traditional documents prepared by Indigenous Australians that were recognised by the Australian Parliament, and the first documentary recognition of Indigenous people in Australian law. The petitions asserted that the Yolngu people owned land over which the federal government had granted mining rights to a private company, Nabalco. In 1971 the court decided that the ordinances and mining leases were valid, and that the Yolngu people were not able to establish their native title at common law, in a decision known as the ''Milirrpum'' decision, or the Gove land rights case. Nabalco
Nabalco, (North Australian Bauxite and Alumina Company) was a mining and extraction company set up in 1964 to exploit bauxite reserves on the Gove Peninsula, Australia. Nabalco was renamed ''Alcan Gove Pty Ltd'' in 2002. Nabalco was formed from a consortium including the Swiss-based Alusuisse (70%) and the Australian company CSR Limited. The development was opposed by the indigenous inhabitants, which gave rise to the legal action Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd (Gove land rights case). That resulted in a ruling against intrinsic native land rights in 1971.
