''Newsround'' (stylised as ''newsround'', and originally called ''John Craven's Newsround'' before his departure in 1989) is a BBC children's news programme, which has run continuously since 4 April 1972. It was one of the world's first television news magazines aimed specifically at children. John Craven
John Raymond Craven, (born 16 August 1940) is an English journalist and television presenter, best known for presenting the BBC programmes '' Newsround'', ''Countryfile'' and '' Beat the Brain''. Early life Craven was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire and educated at Leeds Modern School. Craven's father was held as a prisoner of war in Japan for three years during World War II. He left school at 16 and began an apprenticeship at Yorkshire Copperworks, writing for the company magazine. Career He started his professional life in print journalism as a junior reporter on a local newspaper, the ''Harrogate Advertiser'', before working for the ''Yorkshire Post'' and as a freelance correspondent and writer for national newspapers. Television He joined the BBC staff in Newcastle upon Tyne to work on local radio and television, before moving to the BBC in Bristol in 1970. Edward Barnes (television Executive)
Edward Campbell Barnes (8 October 1928 – 8 September 2021) was a British television executive, and producer at the BBC. He was credited with creating the children's television programme ''Newsround''. Biography Barnes was a co-creator of '' Blue Peter'' in 1958, and the programme's assistant director. Later, he was a producer of the series. It was Barnes, with colleague Biddy Baxter, who in late 1962 toured London pet shops after the show's mongrel puppy died and a clandestine substitute (soon known as Petra) was needed so as not to needlessly upset young viewers. Helen Rollason
Helen Frances Rollason (''née'' Grindley; 11 March 1956 – 9 August 1999) was a British sports journalist and television presenter, who in 1990 became the first female presenter of the BBC's sports programme ''Grandstand''. She was also a regular presenter of ''Sport on Friday'', and of the children's programme ''Newsround'' during the 1980s. Born in London, Rollason studied to become a PE teacher before entering radio broadcasting in 1980. After directing sport related content for Channel 4, where she helped to bring American football to British television, she anchored coverage of the 1987 World Student Games and 1988 Summer Olympics for ITV. Her work on ''Grandstand'' proved popular with viewers, and led to a number of other sports presenting roles for Rollason throughout the 1990s. Lizo Mzimba is an English journalist and television presenter, currently the Entertainment Correspondent for BBC News. Early life He attended the independent Solihull School (during which time he was also leader of the Birmingham Schools' Symphony Orchestra) and The University of Birmingham. ''Sportsround'' is a weekly spin-off from CBBC children's news programme ''Newsround''. The sports magazine show was broadcast between 2005 and 2010, on Friday evenings at 6:30pm on CBBC Channel and on Saturday mornings on BBC Two at 7.25am. ''Sportsround'' was the only sports television show in the UK that was specifically aimed at children. First broadcast in 2005, ''Sportsround'' was a well-known children's programme, regularly having big names on the show, including David Beckham, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Frank Lampard. Lucy Mathen (born 1953) is an Indian-born British Ophthalmology, ophthalmologist and former journalist. Having initially worked for the BBC, she retrained as a doctor and launched Second Sight – a non-profit organisation aimed at curing cataract blindness in India's poorest state, Bihar. A children's news program is a type of news program that is specifically aimed at children, usually 6–14 years olds, rather than an adult audience. The programme is usually made by the network's news and current affairs department, rather than the children's department. As the programme is aimed at a much younger audience from ordinary adults focused news programme, there are significant differences in the style and make-up of the programme. These are for example: the programme has news stories that children would be interested in, usually avoiding deep political and business news and more dealing with popular cultures such as music and television. The programme is presented in with much lighter tone, with the language being much simpler and less complex and has graphics and sounds that are much more colourful. Chris Rogers (born 13 November 1975) is a British broadcast journalist specialising in investigative journalism, and news presenter. Julie Etchingham
Julie Anne Etchingham (born 21 August 1969) is an English journalist who works as a television newsreader with ITV News. A graduate of Newnham College, Cambridge, Etchingham joined the BBC as a trainee after completing her studies, and went on to present the children's news programme ''Newsround'' in 1994. She joined Sky News in 2002, and also presented editions of ''Five News'' when Sky won the contract to produce news programming for Channel 5 in 2005. Krishnan Guru-Murthy (born 5 April 1970) is a British journalist. He is the lead presenter of ''Channel 4 News''. He also presents '' Unreported World'', a foreign-affairs documentary series.
