The ''News-Times'' is a semiweekly newspaper published in Newport, Oregon, United States. It was established in the 1880s and is owned by the News Media Corporation. The ''News-Times'' is published on Wednesdays and Fridays has a circulation of 6,061. It is the newspaper of record for Lincoln County. History At least 20 different newspapers have been published in the Lincoln County area. The county's first newspaper was the ''Yaquina Post'', established in 1882 and published in Yaquina City by Collins Van Cleve. In 1889, Van Cleve was also publishing the ''Scio Press'' out of Yaquina City. One of the papers, founded in 1886, was called the ''Newport News'', but it was short-lived. Waldport, Oregon
Waldport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,033 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Alsea River and Alsea Bay, south of Newport and north of Yachats. History Settlement of Waldport began in 1879 when David Ruble bought squatter’s rights from Lint Starr for $300 for property including the area now known as “Old Town”. Many early settlers were of German descent, and one of the names proposed for this town was Waldport, “wald” meaning forest or trees, and “port” referring to its proximity to the ocean. It is interesting to note that the town’s name is unique. The plat for the town was recorded on September 9, 1885 and by 1911, when Waldport was incorporated, it boasted a dozen businesses and 150 inhabitants. Toledo, Oregon
Toledo is a city located on the Yaquina River and along U.S. Route 20 in Lincoln County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 3,465 at the 2010 census. The city was a 2009 All-America City Award finalist. History European-American settlement in Toledo began in 1866, when John Graham, his son Joseph, and William Mackey, claimed land made available by the Homestead Act of 1862. The site was called "Graham's Landing" until a post office was established two years later. Joseph D. Graham, John's son, named the post office for Toledo, Ohio, because he was homesick. The ''Lincoln County Leader'' was a weekly American newspaper published in Toledo, Oregon from 1893 to 1987. The newspaper was originally published as a Democratic paper, but its party affiliation changed with the ownership. For many years the newspaper was the primary journal in Lincoln County. History The first publisher of the ''Lincoln County Leader'' was John F. Stewart.(–1917). The paper was originally published every Thursday. Subscription rates for three months were 50 cents, 75 cents for six months, and $1.50 for a year. In 1893, Stewart had moved to Toledo, Oregon from Woodburn, a town in the Willamette Valley, where he had been publishing a paper called the ''World'', which was operating in competition with the ''Independent''. Newport, Oregon
Newport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. Newport was named for Newport, Rhode Island. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,989, an increase of nearly 5% over its 2000 population; as of 2019, it had an estimated population of 10,853. The area was originally home to the Yacona tribe, whose history can be traced back at least 3000 years. White settlers began homesteading the area in 1864. The town was named by Sam Case, who also became the first postmaster. Scio, Oregon
Scio ( ) is a city in Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 838 at the 2010 census. History ''Oregon Geographic Names'' suggests that Scio was named by one of the original residents, William McKinney, who, with Henry L. Turner, set up a flour mill at the new town. Turner suggested McKinney come up with a name for the place, and McKinney used the name of his former home, Scio, Ohio. Scio in Ohio is, in turn named for a Greek island called ''Chios''; the Italian version of the name is Scio. Scio post office, headed by postmaster Euphronius Wheeler, was established on October 3, 1860. Thomas Creek, which flows through the city, was named for Frederick Thomas, who obtained a Donation Land Claim and settled on the banks of the creek in 1846.
