Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the village of Newmarket-on-Fergus, in County Clare, Ireland. The club has the distinction of winning the first ever Clare Senior Football Championship and has won the Clare Senior Hurling Championship more times than any other club. In 2012 they won their first Senior Hurling title in 31 years, defeating Cratloe in the final. They have under 6+ hurling, under 8+ camogie, under 10+ ladies football and under 8-12 football teams. Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Clare Junior Hurling Championship
Clare Junior Hurling Championship is the third-tier hurling competition organized by the Clare County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The competition is confined to clubs organised by Clare GAA. The winners usually will play in the intermediate grade the following year for the Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship. They will also represent Clare GAA in the Munster Junior Club Hurling Championship. The 2022 Junior Champions are St Joseph's Doora-Barefield GAA, St. Joseph's, Doora-Barefield who defeated their near-neighbours Éire Óg, Inis GAA, Éire Óg, Ennis by a single point to be crowned champions for the fifth time at this grade. Hurling Clubs In County Clare
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Colin Ryan (Clare Hurler)
Colin Ryan (born 2 September 1988) is an Irish hurler. His league and championship career with the Clare senior team lasted ten years from 2007 to 2017. Born in Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare, Ryan first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St. Flannan's College. Here he won an All-Ireland medal in 2005, as well as back-to-back Harty Cup medals. Ryan simultaneously began his club career at juvenile and underage levels with Newmarket-on-Fergus. After earlier winning several county under-21 championship medals, he won a county senior championship medal in 2012. Ryan made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he joined the Clare minor team. After little success in this grade, he later won an All-Ireland medal with the under-21 team in 2009. John McMahon (hurler)
John McMahon (born 1949) is an Irish former hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Clare senior team. McMahon first joined the Clare team in the early 1970s and was a regular member of the starting fifteen over the course of the next decade. During that time he won two National Hurling League winners' medals and two All-Star awards, however, he missed out on a Munster winners' medal on a number of occasions. John Fox (hurler)
John Fox (31 March 1892 – 22 July 1967) was an Irish hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Clare senior team. Fox was a regular member of the starting fifteen throughout the second decade of the twentieth century. He was particularly active during the 1914 championship when he won a set of All-Ireland and Leinster winners' medals. At club level Fox enjoyed a lengthy career with Newmarket-on-Fergus, winning numerous county championship medals. John Joe Doyle
John Joe "Goggles" Doyle (14 June 1906 – 11 August 2000) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Clare senior team. Doyle made his first appearance for the team during the 1926 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1938 championship. During that time he won one Munster medal. Doyle was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Doyle is a six-time county club championship medalist with Newmarket-on-Fergus. In retirement from playing Doyle was recognised as one of a number of the "greatest players never to have won an All-Ireland medal". In 1990 Doyle was presented with the GAA All-Time All-Star Award. Munster Junior Club Hurling Championship
The Munster Junior Club Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Munster GAA Hurling Junior Club Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Munster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the five champion junior clubs and one champion intermediate club in the province of Munster in Ireland. It is the most prestigious competition for junior clubs in Munster hurling. The Munster Intermediate Club Championship was introduced in 2001. In its current format, the championship begins in late October or early November and is usually played over a four-week period. The six participating club teams compete in a straight knockout competition that culminates with the Munster final for the two remaining teams. Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Clare GAA, Clare County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association for the second tier hurling teams in the county of County Clare, Clare in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Cusack Park (Ennis), Cusack Park. The championship includes a group stage which is followed by a knock-out phase for the top teams. There is also promotion involving the Clare Senior Hurling Championship and relegation involving the Clare Junior Hurling Championship.
