Newman's
Newman's was an American department store chain based out of Joplin, Missouri. Newman Mercantile Company was started by Jewish entrepreneur Joseph Newman, a German immigrant, in the mid 19th century. Joseph Newman's son Albert and son in law Gabe Newburger opened the first Newman's dry goods store in Joplin in 1898. In 1910 Newman's relocated their Joplin store to the newly built Newman Brothers Building located at the corner of 6th & Main in downtown Joplin. Newman's department store operated out of that building until 1972, when they relocated to the newly completed Northpark Mall. Newman's co-developed the mall with Enterprise Development. Newman's filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1987 closing some of their locations, and closing the last of their stores in 1988. Newman Brothers Building
The Newman Brothers Building is a former commercial building in Joplin, Missouri, Joplin, Missouri. The building was the home of Newman's Department Store from 1910 to 1972. Northpark Mall (Missouri)
Northpark Mall is a super regional mall located in Joplin, Missouri. The mall opened in 1972 with 600,000 square feet, and featured 60 stores, restaurants, and other services. Today, the Northpark mall is 1,080,000 square feet, and features more than 100 inline tenants including a food court. Northpark Mall is the largest mall in the Joplin region and serves a trade area of nearly 500,000 people. Freeman hospital added a soft play area in the Macy's women's court in the summer of 2014. The mall was also the temporary home of the 11th and 12th grades of Joplin High School until August 2014, when the new high school was completed. Northpark Mall is managed by CBL & Associates Properties. The anchor stores are Vintage Stock, TJ Maxx, H&M, JCPenney, and Dunham's Sports. Heer's
Heer's Department Store, with its original location at 138 Park Central West (formerly College Street) in Springfield, Missouri, was one of southwest Missouri's largest and most prominent department stores for 80 years. Heer's Department Store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. History 1869-1995 Heer's was founded in 1869 by German immigrant Charles H. Heer (1820-1898) and incorporated as Charles H. Heer Dry Goods Company in 1882. Charles H. Heer passed management of the store to his youngest son, Francis Xavier Heer (1862-1949), in 1886. Francis X. Heer became store president upon his father's death and remained in that position until his death. After a fire destroyed the store in 1913, a new building was built at the 138 Park Central Square location.
