Newfoundland And Labrador Route 503
Route 503, also known as Grenfell Drive, is a north–south highway in the Labrador West region of southwestern Labrador. It connects Wabush with the Trans-Labrador Highway and the town of Labrador City. Route description Route 503 begins in Wabush's southern neighbourhoods at an intersection between Snow's Drive and Bowater Drive as a two-lane highway. It heads northwest through neighbourhoods before passing along the western side of downtown, where it temporarily widens to a four-lane divided highway. The highway now narrows back to two-lanes and passes north through wooded areas before passing by an industrial/business district and the Wabush Airport before Route 503 comes to an end at an intersection with Route 500 (Trans-Labrador Highway) near Labrador City. Wabush is a small town in the western tip of Labrador, bordering Quebec, known for transportation and iron ore operations. Economy Wabush is the twin community of Labrador City. At its peak population in the late 1970s, the region had a population of just over 22,000. A reduction in iron mining operations in the late 20th century caused a major decline in jobs and population. Labrador West
Labrador West (2013 pop.: 10,319) refers to a region in western Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador containing the twin towns of Labrador City and Wabush. The area is located in the southwest corner of Labrador, near the Quebec border and has been described as "a dichotomy of pristine wilderness and industrial development." The region's livelihood is based on iron ore mining which can be traced to the 1950s when the Iron Ore Company of Canada constructed Labrador City and the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway to haul ore to the port of Sept-Îles, Quebec, 575 km to the south. The adjacent Wabush Mines were established in the 1960s by another company, along with the town of Wabush and the Wabush Lake Railway which connects to the QNSL. Labrador City is a town in western Labrador (part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador), near the Quebec border. With a population of 7,412 as of 2021, it is the second-largest population centre in Labrador, behind Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Fermont () is a town in northeastern Quebec, Canada, near the Quebec-Labrador border about from Labrador City on Route 389, which connects to the Trans-Labrador Highway (Newfoundland and Labrador Route 500). It is the seat of the Regional County Municipality of Caniapiscau.
