Route 440 (also known as Admiral Palliser's Trail) is a relatively short highway in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, on the West Coast. The highway was named in honor of Admiral Hugh Palliser. The highway starts at an interchange at Route 1 in Corner Brook, and terminates at Cox's Cove. The speed limit is 80 km/h except in communities where the speed is reduced to 50 km/h (except in Cox's Cove where the speed is reduced to 30 km/h). There are no local roads or communities branching off Route 440, except in Cox's Cove, where the route ends to a T-intersection. Route description Route 440 begins at the westernmost edge of Corner Brook at an interchange with Route 1 (Trans-Canada Highway, Exit 7). Long Range Mountains
The Long Range Mountains are a series of mountains along the west coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The long range mountains form the northernmost section of the Appalachian mountain chain on the eastern seaboard of North America. Mapping of the Great Northern Peninsula was first done in the early 1900s by Mattie Mitchell, Mi'kmaq chieftain, guide and explorer. The Bay of Islands is an extensive inlet located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland, in Canada. It is a sub-basin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, consisting of many inlets such as Humber Arm and Goose Arm. Irishtown-Summerside is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located about 2.5 miles north of Corner Brook. The Post Office was established on March 1, 1965 and the first Postmistress was Blanch Anderson. The town had a population of 1,418 in the Canada 2016 Census. This contiguous settlement was formerly two separate villages, one of which was known originally as Petipas (or Petipa's) Cove. Humber Arm
The Humber Arm is the southernmost arm of the Bay of Islands on the west coast of Newfoundland. The arm has the highest concentration of fresh water of the entire bay, due to inflow of the Humber River. The Humber is one of the major rivers on the island of Newfoundland, making the Bay of Islands an important estuary. Near the mouth of the Humber River appropriately named "Humber Mouth", is the city of Corner Brook (2006 pop.: 20,083), as well as several neighbouring suburbs. The Humber River was used for many years to float logs down to the Bay of Islands where a large Bowater pulp and paper mill at Corner Brook turned them into paper products. It is approximately 120 kilometres long; it flows through the Long Range Mountains, southeast then southwest, through Deer Lake, to the Bay of Islands at Corner Brook.
