Newcastle Sunday
''Newcastle Sunday'' is the 45th release by avant-folk/blues singer/songwriter Jandek, released by Corwood Industries. It is a recording of his second ever live performance, recorded at The Sage Gateshead, England. Like 2005's ''Glasgow Sunday'', ''Newcastle Sunday'' features the Corwood Representative on vocals and guitar along with bassist Richard Youngs and drummer Alex Neilson, although neither sideman is credited on the album's cover. It is also notable for being Corwood Industries' first-ever double-CD release. The DVD counterpart to this title was released later in the same year. Like the ''Glasgow Sunday'' DVD, the ''Newcastle Sunday'' DVD features 2 camera angles, but, unlike its predecessor, it does not feature an edited mix of the two. The front cover shows a medieval stone castle, identified by a member of the Jandek discussion group as Dover Castle in Kent, in the South East of England. Jandek
Jandek is the musical alias of Houston, Texas based lo-fi folk singer Sterling Smith. Since 1978, Jandek has independently released over 45 albums without granting interviews or providing any biographical information, releasing on a self-made label "Corwood Industries". Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues music, frequently using an open and unconventional chord structure. ''Allmusic'' has described him as "the most enigmatic figure in American music". History A review of the debut album ''Ready for the House'' (1978) in ''OP'' magazine, the first ever national press given to Jandek, referred to the artist as Sterling Smith. Smith has kept his personal history secret, revealing only one story about his pre-Corwood years: he wrote seven novels but burned them upon rejection from New York publishers. Khartoum Variations
''Khartoum Variations'' is the first of six releases in 2006 by singer-songwriter Jandek. Released by Corwood Industries, it is his 44th album overall. The recordings are alternate versions of seven of the eight songs from his previous album, ''Khartoum''. There has been some speculation on the Jandek discussion group that ''Khartoum Variations'' may be the result of an earlier attempt to record the same songs. Since Jandek releases feature limited information other than song titles, copyright dates and Corwood's mailing address, this cannot be confirmed. In the album's artwork, the artist stands in front of Dublin Castle, as identified by a member of the Jandek discussion list. The photo appears to have been heavily altered, seemingly removing part of the building from the picture, as evidenced by pictures taken from the same angle by the same member. The Sage Gateshead
Sage Gateshead is a concert venue and musical education centre in Gateshead on the south side of the River Tyne in North East England. Opened in 2004 and occupied by North Music Trust it is part of the Gateshead Quays development which includes the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Its name honors a patron: the accountancy software company The Sage Group. Glasgow Sunday
''Glasgow Sunday'' is the second of four albums released in 2005 by musician Jandek on Corwood Industries, as (0779). His 41st overall, it was recorded live on October 17, 2004 at The Arches, Glasgow, as part of the Instal festival. This was the first known live appearance of Jandek, who played unannounced with backing from Richard Youngs on bass and Alex Neilson on drums. A DVD of this performance was released on June 15, 2006. Like the original album (and all of Jandek's previous output), it was released by Corwood Industries and shares the same catalog number as the CD version, albeit with the suffix "DVD" attached (0779-DVD). It is Corwood's first ever home video release. The DVD was filmed using two cameras - one focused entirely on Jandek, and the other situated farther from the stage and alternating between a wide shot of the stage and closer shots of Youngs and Nielson. Richard Youngs
Richard Youngs is an English musician based in Glasgow since the early 1990s. His catalogue of solo and collaborative work formally begins with ''Advent'', first issued in 1990. He plays many instruments, most commonly choosing the guitar, but he has been known to use other instruments including the shakuhachi, accordion, theremin, dulcimer, a home-made synthesizer (common on early recordings) and even a motorway bridge. He also released an album which was entirely ''a cappella''. For many years, live performances were very occasional and almost always in Glasgow; he has stated publicly that he finds live performance "incredibly nerve-racking: stomach cramps, tension headaches...". Alex Neilson
Alex Neilson (born 22 September 1982) is an English drummer, percussionist and singer who is based in Glasgow but grew up in Leeds. He is a founding member and main songwriter of folk-rock group Trembling Bells (2008-2018). He is also known for his continuing collaborations with Alasdair Roberts, Will Oldham and Richard Youngs, and for his work with elusive American singer/songwriter Jandek. Career Over the years Neilson has performed alongside a large number of bands and artists including Lucky Luke, The One Ensemble of Daniel Padden, Ashtray Navigations, Alastair Galbraith, Isobel Campbell, Ben Reynolds, Matt Valentine, Tanakh, Josephine Foster, Six Organs of Admittance and Taurpis Tula, as well as Directing Hand and Scatter, both of which he founded.
