Newbridge Avenue, Dublin
Newbridge Avenue () is a road in the Sandymount district of Dublin which links Herbert Road and Tritonville Road. In the novel ''Ulysses'', the funeral of the character ''Paddy Dignam'' starts here at number 9 and continues on to Glasnevin Cemetery via Tritonville Road. The Dignams were said to live at number 9; the property was, in reality, vacant in 1904. Both this road and Herbert Road were built across land which once belonged to Haigs' distillery and so it used to be called ''Haig's Lane''; the foundations of the Avenue were constructed with stone which originally came from the Dodderbank Distillery. The distillery fields at this location featured in the sensational murder of the Reverend George Wogan in 1826. A new stone bridge replaced the old wooden toll bridge in the mid-19th century, giving the road the name of "New Bridge Avenue." Construction of houses upon this land then took place in the 1860s. River Dodder
The River Dodder ( ga, An Dothra) is one of the three main rivers in Dublin, Ireland, the others being the Liffey, of which the Dodder is the largest tributary, and the Tolka. Course and system The Dodder rises on the northern slopes of Kippure in the Wicklow Mountains and is formed from several streams. The headwaters flow from Kippure Ridge, and include, and are often mapped solely as, Tromanallison (Allison's Brook), which is then joined by Mareen's Brook, including the Cataract of the Brown Rowan, and then the combined flow meeting the Cot and Slade Brooks. The Irish property bubble was the speculative excess element of a long-term price increase of real estate in the Republic of Ireland from the early 2000s to 2007, a period known as the later part of the Celtic Tiger. In 2006, the prices peaked at the top of the bubble, with a combination of increased speculative construction (financed almost entirely by senior debt) and rapidly rising prices; in 2007 the prices first stabilised and then started to fall until 2010 following the shock effect of the Great Recession. By the second quarter of 2010, house prices in Ireland had fallen by 35% compared with the second quarter of 2007, and the number of housing loans approved fell by 73%. Dodderbank Distillery
The Dodderbank Distillery was owned by the Haig family. It was founded in 1795 by Robert Haig (1764-1834), whose sister had married John Jameson. By 1802 it was one of the largest distilleries in Dublin. The distillery was forced to close by the Revenue Commissioners, and was then bought by Aeneas Coffey Aeneas Coffey (1780–1839) was an Irish inventor and distiller. Biography Coffey was born in 1780. According to some sources he was born in Ireland most likely in Co. Dublin or Co. Wicklow. Some references refer to his birth in Calais, France, ..., who ran it until the 1840s. Glasnevin Cemetery ( ga, Reilig Ghlas Naíon) is a large cemetery in Glasnevin, Dublin, Ireland which opened in 1832. It holds the graves and memorials of several notable figures, and has a museum. Tritonville Road, Dublin
Tritonville Road (), Sandymount, Dublin 4, is connected to Lansdowne Road by both Herbert Road and Newbridge Avenue. At its southern end, it meets Serpentine Avenue. The northern side of Tritonville road is considered to be part of Irishtown by the locals even though the postcode is Sandymount. The street takes its name from the Tritonville baths, established by the Cranfield family in the late 18th century; these were in turn named after the sea-god Triton. Herbert Road, Dublin
Herbert Road () in Ballsbridge, Ireland is a mostly residential road that links Tritonville Road with Lansdowne Road. Newbridge Avenue joins by the bridge, in front of Marian College and the former site of Sandymount High School next door. There are several hotels on the road. Noteworthy is the Mount Herbert Hotel which is a conversion of a terrace of stately homes. The road extends to the roundabout at the junction, which is part of Lansdowne Road. Both this road, and Newbridge Avenue, are built on the former site of Haigs' distillery. The house at 14 Herbert Road sold for €2.41m in February 2004, setting a record price for a house on this road. |
