New Zealand Champions (soccer)
The New Zealand National League is the name given to the current New Zealand top football competition. Originally set up as the New Zealand National Soccer League there has been many versions of the competition as well as many different names. The most common format saw club teams play each other, at least two times, on a home and away basis. At the completion of those games, the best-performing team was declared as the New Zealand champion. The latest version has the clubs play in their regional leagues with the top teams qualifying for the Championship phase to then play each other for the champion. Gisborne City AFC
Gisborne City AFC was an association football club in Gisborne, New Zealand. Founded in 1939 as Eastern Union, the club changed its name to Gisborne City after winning the Central Districts League at the first attempt in 1967. As Eastern Union, the club had competed in the Chatham Cup since the early 1950s, and reached the semi-final (and North Island Final) in 1957, losing to eventual champions Seatoun 3–1. Gisborne set the New Zealand record for the most players from one club to be chosen for the New Zealand national football team to compete at a FIFA World Cup. Five players were selected to participate in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. 1976 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1976 New Zealand National Soccer League was the seventh season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Promotion and relegation Wellington City (soccer) finished last in the 1975 league and so contested a round-robin home and away play-off series with the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues (Manurewa, Wellington Diamond United, and Christchurch Rangers respectively). The series was primarily a clash of the two Wellington teams, with Rangers and Manurewa only managing one win each. W.D.U. proved to be too strong for the rest of the teams, remaining undefeated through the series to return to the league after a one-year gap. 1975 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1975 New Zealand National Soccer League was the sixth season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Promotion and relegation Wellington Diamond United finished last in the 1974 league and so contested a round-robin home and away play-off series with the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues ( Eden, Porirua United, and Caversham respectively). Caversham dominated the series and returned to the league after a gap of just one season. With only one loss in the first five games (to Porirua), Caversham had an unassailable three point lead after the first five rounds; the last round of matches was not played as it would have made no difference to the outcome. The 1974 New Zealand National Soccer League was the fifth season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Promotion and relegation Caversham finished last in the 1973 league and so contested a round-robin home and away play-off series with the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues (North Shore United, Waterside, and Christchurch Rangers respectively). With the exception of Shore's two big wins over the Wharfies of Wellington the matches were evenly contested, and it was those two performances which finally told. With three wins, two draws and a loss, North Shore United pipped Caversham by one point to enter the NZNSL for the first time. North Shore United Association Football Club is an amateur football club based in the North Shore, Auckland. They compete in the Northern League, where they last won the competition in 2019. The 1973 New Zealand National Soccer League was the fourth season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Promotion and relegation Auckland City FC finished last in the 1972 league, but did not enter the play-off series for a place in the 1973 league. Neither did any team from the Southern regional competition. As such, the play-offs became a simple home and away series between the winners of the northern and central regional leagues, Hamilton and Wellington Diamond United. When both ties finished in 1–1 draws, a replay on neutral venue was played to decide the tie. This took place at Wembley park in Wanganui, and saw WDU victorious by two goals to one. University-Mount Wellington is an association football club in Auckland, New Zealand. It was formed from the amalgamation of University AFC and Mount Wellington AFC. The team play at Bill McKinlay Park, Panmure, Auckland. Club history During much of the 1970s and 1980s, Mt Wellington AFC was a strong club side, rivalled only by Christchurch United. The 1972 New Zealand National Soccer League was the third season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Promotion and relegation Western Suburbs FC finished last in the 1971 league, and joined the winners of the Northern, Central, and Southern leagues — Takapuna City (North Shore), Waterside (Wellington), and New Brighton (Christchurch) respectively — in a play-off series to decide the team which would be granted entry to the national league. Dunedin Technical (known locally as Tech) is a semi-professional association football club in Dunedin, New Zealand. They compete in the ODT FootballSouth Premier League and were the 2018 ODT FootballSouth Premier League champions. Club history The club was founded as King Edward Technical College Old Boys in 1920, and changed their name to Dunedin Technical in 1980. They and are based at Culling Park, in the suburb of Saint Kilda.
