New Zealand competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Originally to be held from 25 August to 6 September 2020, the event has been postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being held from 24 August to 5 September 2021. It was New Zealand's 14th appearance at Summer Paralympics. Medalists Competitors Officials Former Paralympic cyclist and gold medallist Paula Tesoriero was appointed Chef de Mission in 2019. Athletics In May 2021, New Zealand announced a squad of six track and field athletes to compete at the Summer Paralympics — Holly Robinson, Caitlin Dore, Anna Grimaldi, William Stedman, Lisa Adams and Danielle Aitchison. Lisa Adams (athlete)
Lisa Adams (born 18 November 1990) is a New Zealand Paralympic F37 shot putter and F38 discus thrower. Adams competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan, and won a gold medal in Women's shot put F37, setting 4 Paralympics records in the process. Early life and athletic career Adams was born and grew up in Rotorua, New Zealand. She was diagnosed with left hemiplegia, a form of cerebral palsy, at an early age. She played netball and basketball when she was growing up, and played rugby with the Waikite women's able-bodied team in 2017. In 2018 she became the first woman to play with the New Zealand men's national team at the Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) Commonwealth Championship. Anna Steven
Anna Steven (born 31 August 2000) is a para-athlete from New Zealand. She is representing New Zealand at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Biography Steven was born in Auckland in 2000. She was educated at Westlake Girls High School on the city's North Shore. As of 2020, she is a student at the University of Auckland, studying biomedical science. When she was 13 years old, Steven had chemotherapy and surgery to treat osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. As a result her lower right leg was amputated. In 2016 she watched Liam Malone compete for New Zealand at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and also met him at a "welcome home" event. She decided to take up athletics and quickly excelled in short sprint distances. Six months after her first domestic athletics competition, Steven was selected to represent New Zealand at the 2017 World Junior Para Athletics Championships. Danielle Aitchison
Danielle Aitchison (born 16 August 2001) is a New Zealand para-athlete who is representing her country at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. She competes in the 100 metres and 200 metres in international events. Biography Aitchison was born in Morrinsville in 2001 and grew up in Patetonga in the Hauraki District. She attended Kaihere School. Aitchison was born with severe jaundice, cerebral palsy and 80-90% hearing loss. She has two uncommon types of cerebral palsy: athetoid and ataxia. She has cochlear implants in both ears. While growing up Aitchison participated in ballet, netball and hockey. She began competing in para-athletics at age 16 in 2017, at the Halberg Junior Disability Games in Auckland, New Zealand. She has competed in long jump and won a national title in the event. Paula Tesoriero
Paula Margaret Tesoriero (born 29 August 1975 in Wellington) is a former New Zealand paralympics racing cyclist and senior public servant. Early life Tesoriero was born with amniotic band syndrome, which caused mobility issues. She got her first bicycle when she was five and used it as a way to "keep up with everyone." Her left leg was amputated below the knee when she was thirteen. Tesoriero uses an artificial left leg and is missing an ankle on her right leg. When she competes, she uses a carbon limb on her left leg. Tesoriero graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a Bachelor of Arts in 1998, a Bachelor of Laws in 2000 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Management in 2009. The Wheelchair rugby tournament at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan was the seventh edition of Wheelchair rugby as a Paralympic sport since its debut as a demonstration sport at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. The competition was hosted at the Yoyogi National Stadium and was held from 25 to 29 August 2021. Eight teams competed in the competition which included the debutant of Denmark at the Paralympics. The eight teams were separated into two groups of four with the top two teams from each group qualifying through to the semi-finals while the bottom two played off in the fifth and seventh place match respectively.
