New Zealand State Highway 51
State Highway 51 (SH 51) is a New Zealand state highway that runs between Napier and Hastings via Clive. Known locally as the ''Coastal Route'', it was the main route between the two cities prior to the completion of the Hawke's Bay Expressway. History The route that SH 51 follows is part of the original route between Napier and Hastings, and prior to 1 August 2019 formed part of . Between the late 1960s and 2011, the nearby Hawke's Bay Expressway was constructed, providing a high-speed bypass of Napier and Hastings. Hawke's Bay Expressway
The Hawke's Bay Expressway, known also as the Napier-Hastings Expressway, runs from Hawke's Bay Airport, through Napier and Hastings, and ends at Pakipaki, just south of Hastings, a total length of 24 km. It is part of State Highway 2 (SH 2). History The first section (Kennedy Road – Pakowhai Road) opened in the late 1960s, and construction did not recommence until the late 1990s (south of Pakowhai Road). For 30 years the partially formed approaches for the Kennedy Road overbridge stood each side of the dual carriageway from Napier to Taradale. In 2002, work began to strengthen the approaches and build the bridge: the new expressway opened through to Hawkes Bay Airport late in 2003. In 2007 the Meeanee Road interchange was built to grade separate that intersection. A new extension south of Flaxmere opened in 2011. Tamatea is a suburb in the west of the city of Napier, in the Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's eastern North Island. Awatoto
Awatoto is a coastal suburb area located near Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "stream for hauling canoes" for ''Awatōtō''. Awatoto had a population of 309 at the 2013 New Zealand census, a decrease of 48 people since the 2006 census. There were 153 males and 156 females. 83.2% were European/Pākehā, 23.2% were Māori, 1.1% were Pacific peoples and 4.2% were Asian. History Ngāti Kahungunu occupied the area prior to colonisation. Waitangi Mission Station was set up on the north bank of the Ngaruroro River for the Church Missionary Society by William Colenso in 1844. Awatoto was included in the sale of the Ahuriri Block for £1,500 on 17 November 1851. A soap works was set up in 1883. It burnt down in 1910 and 1915 and was flooded in 1917. Port Of Napier
Napier Port is in Napier, New Zealand, Napier, New Zealand, on Hawke Bay. It is the North Island's second largest export port by tonnage, and is owned by Napier Port Holdings Limited (). The port is connected to the rail network via the Napier Port Branch (Ahuriri Branch). It hosts dozens of cruise ship visits each year.
