New Zealand Science Review
The New Zealand Association of Scientists is an independent association for scientists in New Zealand. It was founded in 1941 as the New Zealand Association of Scientific Workers, and renamed in 1954Gregory, G., 2013. Not to be forgotten: New Zealand Association of Scientific Workers. It differs from the Royal Society of New Zealand in being an independent non-profit incorporated society and registered charity, rather than being constituted by an Act of Parliament. While not being entirely non-political, the Association focuses on policy, social and economic responsibility aspects of science. David Penny
Edward David Penny CNZM FRSNZ (born 1939 in Taumarunui) is a theoretical and evolutionary biologist from New Zealand. He has researched the nature of evolutionary transformations, and is widely published in the fields of phylogenetic tree, genetics and evolutionary biology. Penny's contributions to science have been recognised with several awards and honours, and acceptance into the National Academy of Sciences. Education and career Penny attended New Plymouth Boys' High School before gaining undergraduate degrees in botany and chemistry at the University of Canterbury. He completed his PhD in botany at Yale University in 1965 and later worked as a postdoctoral researcher at McMaster University. He returned to New Zealand in 1966 and joined the staff at Massey University, within the Department of Plant Biology, School of Biological Sciences, Institute for Molecular BioSciences, and Institute of Fundamental Sciences and in 2005 Penny was named a Distinguished Professor. Joan Mattingley
Joan Muriel Mattingley (married name Cameron; 5 March 1926 – 27 July 2015) was a New Zealand clinical chemist. Mattingley was born in Wellington on 5 March 1926, and was educated at Wellington Girls' College. When aged 17, she applied to work at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research but was told that girls could not become botanists "because it required tramping". Mattingley graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Victoria University College in 1949, and completed a PhD in biological chemistry from Victoria University of Wellington in 1977. She worked as a clinical chemist, and rose to become the senior scientific officer in the biochemistry research unit at Wellington Hospital. Mattingley was twice president of the New Zealand Association of Scientists (NZAS) in 1987/88 and 1988/89. Brian Shorland
Francis Brian Shorland (14 July 1909 – 8 June 1999) was a New Zealand organic chemist. Biography After a BSc and a MSc in organic chemistry he worked for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, before earning a scholarship to go to the University of Liverpool for a PhD under Thomas Percy Hilditch, studying fish liver oils and fats from farm animals. After his retirement in 1969, he held several honorary posts at Victoria University of Wellington. He died on 8 June 1999 and was cremated at Karori Crematorium. Barry Fell
Howard Barraclough Fell (June 6, 1917 – April 21, 1994), better known as Barry Fell, was a professor of invertebrate zoology at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. While his primary professional research included starfish and sea urchins, Fell is best known for his pseudoarchaeological work in New World epigraphy, arguing that various inscriptions in the Americas are best explained by extensive pre-Columbian contact with Old World civilizations. His writings on epigraphy and archaeology are generally rejected by those mainstream scholars who have considered them. Marsden Medal
The Marsden Medal is a yearly award given by the New Zealand Association of Scientists. It is named after Sir Ernest Marsden and honours "a lifetime of outstanding service to the cause or profession of science, in recognition of service rendered to the cause or profession of science in the widest connotation of the phrase."
