The 1861 New York state election was held on November 5, 1861, to elect the Secretary of State, the State Comptroller, the New York State Attorney General, the State Treasurer, the State Engineer, a Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, two Canal Commissioners and an Inspector of State Prisons, as well as all members of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. History The "Independent People's" state convention met on September 10 at Syracuse, New York with the intention to nominate a ticket which would be endorsed by the Republican state convention which was due to meet at the same city on the following day. The convention was dominated by the old Hunkers/Hard faction of the Democratic Party (which had supported John C. Breckinridge for the Presidency the year before, and had been reduced to a small minority at the 1860 New York state election) and the Greeley Republicans. Horatio Ballard
Horatio Ballard (August 1803 – October 8, 1879) was an American lawyer and politician who was New York Secretary of State from January 1, 1862, to December 31, 1863. Life He was born in Homer, New York in 1803 and educated in the Pompey and Cortland Academies. He studied law with Judge Stephens of Cortland and Freeborn G. Jewett of Skaneateles. After being admitted to practice at the age of twenty-four, he partnered with Stephens in Cortland for many years. In 1842, he succeeded Shankland as district attorney. He was a delegate to the 1844 and 1856 Democratic National Conventions. On June 9, 1847, he married Sarah N. Fairchild. He was elected Secretary of State of New York in 1861. He was a member of the New York State Assembly ( Cortland Co.) in 1867. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1867–68, playing an important role. Jarvis Lord
Jarvis Lord (February 10, 1816 in Ballston, Saratoga County, New York – July 24, 1887 in Pittsford, Monroe County, New York), was an American politician from New York. Life He was the son of Daniel Lord (1780–1818) and Clarissa (Seeley) Lord (1783–1867). He attended the common schools, and became a farmer. He married Eliza Ann Decker (1819–1854), and they had three children, among them Assemblyman George D. Lord. About 1842, he removed to a farm in Pittsford. He also became a contractor, engaging in canal construction, and was president of the Bank of Monroe of Rochester. On March 20, 1855, he married Zilpha M. Tibbets (1835–1911). He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Monroe Co., 1st D.) in 1858. Van Rensselaer Richmond (January 1812 in Preston, New York, Preston, Chenango County, New York – November 20, 1883 in Lyons, New York, Lyons, Wayne County, New York) was an American civil engineer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Oliver Richmond (d. 1853). He was educated at the Oxford, New York, Oxford Academy, and in 1834 began work as a Gunter's chain, chainman at the construction of the Chenango Canal. In 1837 he married Anna A. Dennison (d. 1854), and they had four children. In 1837, he was appointed Resident Engineer of the Erie Canal at Lyons, New York. In 1842, he was appointed Division Engineer of the Middle Division of the State Canals at Syracuse, New York, Syracuse. In 1848, he resigned and began to work for the Oswego and Syracuse Railroad, but soon after returned to canal work as Chief Engineer of the construction of the canal from Jordan, New York to the Cayuga Marshes. William Williams (September 6, 1815 – September 10, 1876) was a U.S. Representative from New York, member of the New York State Assembly, railroad executive, and banker. Early life William Williams was born in Bolton, Connecticut, on September 6, 1815, to Sarah and Samuel Williams. He grew up and attended local schools in Bolton. At the age of 17, he moved to Georgia to work in a commercial business, but returned back to Bolton after falling ill. Career Banking career He worked at a bank in Norwich, Connecticut, before moving to Windham where he served as a clerk in his uncle's bank, Bank of Windham. In 1838, he moved to Sandusky, Ohio, and worked as a cashier at the Bank of Sandusky.
