New York State Route 85A (NY 85A) is an east–west state highway in Albany County, New York, in the United States. It serves as a , two-lane alternate route of NY 85 through the town of New Scotland, running from the hamlet of New Salem to the hamlet of New Scotland. While NY 85 bypasses the village of Voorheesville to the south, NY 85A directly serves it, connecting to two state routes inside of the village limits. The route was assigned to its current alignment. Route description NY 85A begins at an intersection with NY 85 in the hamlet of New Salem, located in the northwestern portion of the town of New Scotland. It heads northward from the site of the Punkintown Fair as New Salem Road, leaving New Salem for slightly more open areas north of the hamlet. New Scotland, New York
New Scotland is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 8,648 at the 2010 census. The town is southwest of Albany, New York, the state capital. New Scotland is centrally located in the county. History The town was settled around 1660. New Scotland was founded in 1832 from the west part of the town of Bethlehem. The Bennett Hill Farm, Presbyterian Church in New Scotland and the New Scotland Cemetery, and Onesquethaw Valley Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. John Boyd Thacher State Park is a state park located 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Albany, New York, near Voorheesville, in Albany County on State Route 157. Located mostly atop the Helderberg Escarpment, the park has several hiking trails that offer panoramic views of the Green Mountains in Vermont and the Taconic Mountains of the Hudson Valley. Description The Indian Ladder Trail is open from early summer to mid- November, 8:00 am until sunset, weather permitting. All other trails are open year-round. It is located on the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the best fossil-bearing formations in the US. There are over 12 miles (20 km) of trails in the park including the famous Indian Ladder Trail. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. The office of Superintendent of Public Works was created by an 1876 amendment to the New York State Constitution.
