New York State Route 442 (NY 442) is a state highway located within the town of Peru in Clinton County, New York, in the United States. It is an east–west highway that connects the hamlet of Peru with the Adirondack Northway ( Interstate 87). The western terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 22 in the hamlet of Peru. Its eastern terminus is at a junction with US 9 near the shore of Lake Champlain. NY 442 was assigned in April 1970 as a town-maintained, state-numbered route. It became state-maintained in 1988. Route description NY 442 begins at an intersection with NY 22 (Main Street) in the hamlet of Peru within the town of the same name. The northern half of the community, within Clinton County, is listed as the Au Sable Forks census-designated place (CDP) and had a population of 559 at the 2010 census. The Lake Champlain Transportation Company (LCTC or LCT) is a vehicle ferry operator that runs three routes across Lake Champlain between the US states of New York and Vermont. Ausable Chasm
Ausable Chasm is a sandstone gorge and tourist attraction located near the hamlet of Keeseville, New York, United States. It is directly due west of Port Kent. The Ausable River runs through it and then empties into Lake Champlain. The gorge is about long and is a tourist attraction in the Adirondacks region of Upstate New York. It is fed by the Rainbow Falls at its southern extreme. Geological formation Geologically simple, the Ausable Gorge was carved out of 500 million-year-old Potsdam Sandstone from the Cambrian Period. Since the end of the Pleistocene Epoch ice age 10,000 years ago, the movement and subsequent melting of glaciers created a series of caves and tunnels, which the Ausable River linked up and exploited on its journey to Lake Champlain. New York State Route 22 (NY 22) is a north–south state highway that parallels the eastern border of the U.S. state of New York, from the outskirts of New York City to the hamlet of Mooers in Clinton County near the Canadian border. Interstate 87 (I-87) is a north–south Interstate Highway located entirely within the US state of New York. It is most of the main highway between New York City and Montreal. The highway begins at exit 47 off I-278 in the New York City borough of the Bronx, just north of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and Grand Central Parkway. From there, the route runs northward through the Hudson Valley, the Capital District, and the easternmost part of the North Country to the Canadian border in the town of Champlain.
