County routes in Cattaraugus County, New York, are signed with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices-standard yellow-on-blue pentagon route marker. A handful of pre-MUTCD black-on-yellow rectangular markers still exist on the most remote county road intersections (Cattaraugus County did not switch to the MUTCD markers until the late 1990s). With one exception, county routes in Cattaraugus County are not signed with direction markers (e.g. North–South or East–West); one location on Route 10 in Coldspring has signs bearing North and South markers. As a general rule, Cattaraugus County does not maintain routes within reservations, villages or cities. For routes that enter such municipalities, county maintenance (and the route number) usually stops at the municipal border, with the exceptions of CR 4, which enters the village of Gowanda, and CR 12, which does enter the village of Cattaraugus. Gowanda, New York
Gowanda is a village in western New York, United States. It lies partly in Erie County and partly in Cattaraugus County. The population was 2,512 at the 2020 census. The name is derived from a local Seneca language term meaning "almost surrounded by hills" or "a valley among the hills". The Erie County portion of Gowanda is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan statistical area, while the Cattaraugus County portion is part of the Olean micropolitan statistical area. The village is partly in the Town of Collins in Erie County and partly in the Town of Persia in Cattaraugus County. Bordering Gowanda is the Cattaraugus Reservation, which has a majority population of Seneca. Numerous European Americans live on the reservation in leased properties. Conewango, New York
Conewango is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 1,794 at the 2020 census. The town is named after a creek which flows through the town. The town is on the west border of the county and is northeast of Jamestown. History The name is supposed to mean "walking slowly" in the native language, related to the slow-moving creek. The area of the town was first settled ''circa'' 1816. The Town of Conewango was established in 1823 from a part of the town of Little Valley. In 1826, part of Conewango was used to form the town of Randolph, and another part was used in 1832 to make the town of Leon. East Randolph, New York
East Randolph is a hamlet, census-designated place, and former village in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 620 at the 2010 census. East Randolph is adjacent to the northeast part of the former village of Randolph and is mostly within the town of Randolph, with a small part inside the town of Conewango. Their area code is 716. History The first business opened in 1826, and a post office was opened in 1850. The village of East Randolph was incorporated in 1881. On March 16, 2010, referendums were held in both the village of Randolph and East Randolph to dissolve each entity into a hamlet within the town of Randolph (with the northernmost portion of East Randolph being absorbed by the town of Conewango). The town is named after Albion in Orleans County, the source of some early settlers. New Albion is in the northwest quadrant of the county, northwest of the city of Salamanca. History From approximately the 1640s, the area was in the domain of the Seneca tribe and was first settled by outsiders around 1818. The town of New Albion was established in 1830 from part of the town of Little Valley. The oldest business community in the town was New Albion with its first store opening in 1833. New York State Route 18 (NY 18) is an east–west state highway in western New York in the United States. It runs parallel to the south shore of Lake Ontario for most of its length between Niagara County and Monroe County. NY 18, which also passes through Orleans County, acts as a northerly alternate to NY 104, another east–west route that parallels NY 18 to the south on Ridge Road. The western terminus of NY 18 is at a complex grade-separated interchange with NY 104 outside the village of Lewiston.
