New York State Route 224 (NY 224) is a state highway in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. The route is signed as north–south; however, in actuality the highway follows more of an east–west routing across southeastern Schuyler County and northeastern Chemung County. The western terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 14 in the village of Montour Falls southeast of Seneca Lake and its eastern terminus is at a junction with NY 34 in the village of Van Etten. Route description NY 224 begins at an intersection with NY 14 (North Catharine Street) in the village of Montour Falls. NY 224 proceeds eastward along Clawson Boulevard, a two-lane commercial street through Montour Falls. Montour Falls, New York
Montour Falls is a village located in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,714 at the time of the 2020 census. A waterfall at the end of West Main Street gives the village its name. The name "Montour" is derived from Queen Catharine Montour, a prominent Native American woman of Seneca Indian heritage who lived at the village site in the 18th century. The boundaries defining the Village of Montour Falls occur mostly within the Town of Montour, but a small part lies within the Town of Dix. The village is located approximately twenty miles north of Elmira, New York and three miles south of Watkins Glen, New York. The New York State Academy of Fire Science is located in the village. Catharine is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,656 at the 2020 census. The town is one of two in the county named after Catherine Montour, a Native American interpreter and leader in the area. The Town of Catharine is in the southeastern part of the county and is north of Elmira. History A Seneca village informally known as Catharine's Town was located near the falls. It was destroyed by colonial forces during the Sullivan Expedition of 1779, one of more than 40 villages destroyed across western New York in retaliation for raids in the eastern part of the province. New York State Route 223 (NY 223) is an east–west state highway in Chemung County, New York, in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 13 northeast of the city of Elmira in the town of Horseheads to a junction with NY 224 in the town of Van Etten. In between, NY 223 passes through the town of Erin and serves the hamlet of the same name within the town. The route initially continued east to the village of Candor when it was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York; however, it was cut back to its current length in the early 1950s. Van Etten (town), New York
Van Etten is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the town was 1,541 at the 2020 census. The town is named for the two brothers who founded the village of Van Etten in it. The town is at the northeastern corner of the county, northeast of Elmira. History The area that became Van Etten was first settled around 1794, but more permanent settlement came in 1797. The town of Van Etten was formed in 1854 from the towns of Erin and Cayuta. (Cayuta later became part of Schuyler County.) In 1876, the village of Van Etten was incorporated within the town. In 2017, the village of Van Etten voted to dissolve and rejoin the Town of Van Etten. The dissolution took effect on December 31, 2018. Cayuta is a city in Schuyler County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 508. The City of Cayuta occupies the southeastern corner of the county and is northeast of Elmira. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area.
