New York State Route 220
New York State Route 220 (NY 220) is a state highway located in Chenango County, New York, in the United States. It is signed as an east–west highway, but its actual routing wanders considerably from north to south as it proceeds across the county. The western terminus of NY 220 is at an intersection with NY 41 near the western county line in the town of Smithville. Its eastern terminus is in the town of Oxford, where it becomes County Route 32 (CR 32) east of the village of Oxford. The stub of NY 220 east of Oxford serves as a signed connection between NY 12 and the New York State Veterans' Home at Oxford located east of the village along the Chenango River. In 1916, the New York State Legislature created Route 8-a, an unsigned legislative route connecting legislative Route 8 in the center of Oxford to the Relief Corps Home by way of the east bank of the Chenango River. Smithville, New York
Smithville is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,330 at the 2010 census. The town is at the western border of Chenango County, west of the city of Norwich. History The land was first settled around 1797. The town of Smithville was founded from part of the town of Greene in 1808. The population of Smithville in 1865 was 1,634. The Smithville Valley Grange No. 1397 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.94%, is water. The western town line is the border of Broome and Cortland counties. New York State Woman's Relief Corps Home
The New York State Veterans' Home at Oxford (formerly the New York State Woman's Relief Corps Home) is an old soldiers' home located east of the village of Oxford in Chenango County, New York. The home was established for American Civil War veterans and their wives so they would not be separated in old age. The Woman's Relief Corps (W.R.C.) was an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic Civil War veterans organization. In the 1890s the Woman's Relief Corps campaigned for the establishment of a co-ed old soldiers' home. Their efforts were rewarded in 1897 with the opening of the state soldiers' home just outside Oxford. By 1911 they had expanded to five buildings. By the 1970s it was decided to replace the old wood-frame hospital building with more modern facilities. The New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway (or New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad and also known as the Susie-Q or the Susquehanna) is a Class II American freight railway operating over 400 miles (645 km) of track in the northeastern U.S. states of New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
