New York State Highway 17C
New York State Route 17C (NY 17C) is a state highway in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. Its western terminus is at an intersection with NY 34 in Waverly, Tioga County while its eastern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in Binghamton, Broome County. The route runs concurrently with NY 96 for a block in Owego and for a few blocks with NY 26 in Endicott. The stretch between Waverly and Owego is the former NY 17, as it was routed prior to the opening of the Southern Tier Expressway. The stretch from NY 96 to Binghamton is the original routing of NY 17C and serves as an alternate route between Owego and the Triple Cities. Through all three of the Triple Cities (Endicott, Johnson City, and Binghamton), NY 17C is named Main Street. Interstate 86 (Pennsylvania–New York)
Interstate 86 (I-86) is an Interstate Highway that extends for through northwestern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier region of New York, in the United States. The highway has two segments: the longer of the two begins at an interchange with I-90 east of Erie, Pennsylvania, and ends just beyond the Chemung- Tioga county line at the Pennsylvania border, while the second extends from I-81 east of Binghamton to New York State Route 79 (NY 79) in Windsor. When projects to upgrade the existing NY 17 to Interstate Highway standards are completed, I-86 will extend from I-90 near Erie to the New York State Thruway ( I-87) in Woodbury. Nichols (village), New York
Nichols is a village located in the Town of Nichols in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is taken from that of a local benefactor, Colonel Nichols. The Village of Nichols is on the northern border of the town and is in the Southern Tier District of New York. Nichols is halfway between Binghamton and Elmira. History The Sullivan Expedition of 1779 passed through the region. The village was settled around 1793 and was originally called the "Corners." The community was briefly known as "Rushville," but the name was changed to "Nichols" when the Tioga County was created. New York State Route 282
New York State Route 282 (NY 282) is a north–south state highway located within Tioga County in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. It extends for from the Pennsylvania state line in the town of Nichols, where it connects to Pennsylvania Route 187 (PA 187), to an intersection with NY 17C in the town of Tioga. The route meets the Southern Tier Expressway ( NY 17) and crosses over the Susquehanna River just west of the village of Nichols. NY 282 originally served the hamlet of Smithboro on the northern riverbank via a toll bridge when it was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York. The route south of the junction with former NY 283 was reconstructed during 1964 and 1965 while NY 282 was realigned in January 1969 to cross the river on a new bridge to the east of Smithboro as part of construction of the Southern Tier Expressway between Nichols and Owego. Tioga, New York
Tioga is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 4,455 at the 2020 census. The town is in the southwestern part of the county and lies between Elmira and Binghamton. Tioga is situated in the Southern Tier District of New York. History For thousands of years, this area of New York had been settled by distinct cultures of indigenous peoples. The most recent prehistoric peoples were the Owasco, who appeared to migrate from southern areas and displaced the Point Peninsula complex peoples. However, a 2011 paper by archaeologist Dr. John P. Hart argues there was no definable Owasco culture. They lived in isolated villages and had frequent warfare. Under pressure of warfare, they began to consolidate into larger tribes and confederacies. Erie Railroad
The Erie Railroad was a railroad that operated in the northeastern United States, originally connecting New York City — more specifically Jersey City, New Jersey, where Erie's Pavonia Terminal, long demolished, used to stand — with Lake Erie, at Dunkirk, New York. It expanded west to Chicago with its 1865 merger with the former Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, also known as the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad (NYPANO RR). Its mainline route proved influential in the development and economic growth of the Southern Tier of New York State, including cities such as Binghamton, Elmira, and Hornell. The Erie Railroad repair shops were located in Hornell and was Hornell's largest employer. Southern Tier Line
The Southern Tier Line is a railroad line owned and operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway in the U.S. states of New York and Pennsylvania. A mostly former Erie Railroad line, it is suggested that the line runs from Suffern, New York northwest to Buffalo, New York as it shares trackage with Metro-North Railroad’s Port Jervis Line from Suffern to Port Jervis; NS owns the Suffern to Port Jervis trackage and leases it to Metro-North so it can maintain it for its Port Jervis Line passenger operation.
