New York State Department Of Audit And Control
The New York State Comptroller is an elected constitutional officer of the U.S. state of New York and head of the New York state government's Department of Audit and Control. The New York State Comptroller is the highest-paid state auditor or treasurer in the country. Sixty-one individuals have held the office of State Comptroller since statehood. The incumbent is Thomas DiNapoli, a Democrat. Powers and duties The State Comptroller is in effect New York's chief fiscal officer. Article V, Section 1, of the New York Constitution requires the State Comptroller "to audit all vouchers before payment and all official accounts", "to audit the accrual and collection of all revenues and receipts", and "to prescribe such methods of accounting as are necessary for the performance of the foregoing duties". Thomas DiNapoli
Thomas Peter DiNapoli II (born February 10, 1954) is an American politician serving as the 54th and current New York State Comptroller since 2007. A member of the Democratic Party, he was previously the New York State Assemblyman for the 16th district, first elected in 1986. DiNapoli was elected by the New York State Legislature as New York State Comptroller on February 7, 2007; he was formerly the Chairman of the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. He is a resident of the village of Thomaston, Nassau County, New York (on Long Island). In November 2014, he won reelection, leading the statewide ticket with the most votes. He was easily reelected to a fourth term in November 2018, receiving 64.9% of the vote. Whig Party (United States)
The Whig Party was a political party in the United States during the middle of the 19th century. Alongside the slightly larger Democratic Party, it was one of the two major parties in the United States between the late 1830s and the early 1850s as part of the Second Party System. Four presidents were affiliated with the Whig Party for at least part of their terms. Other prominent members of the Whig Party include Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Rufus Choate, William Seward, John J. Crittenden, and John Quincy Adams. The Whig base of support was centered among entrepreneurs, professionals, planters, social reformers, devout Protestants, and the emerging urban middle class. Bates Cooke
Bates Cooke (December 23, 1787 – May 31, 1841) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He was the son of Captain Lemuel Cooke who had fought in the American Revolutionary War. Bates and his brother Lathrop participated in the War of 1812. Bates Cooke was Supervisor of the Town of Cambria, New York in 1814. Then he studied law, was admitted to the bar about 1815 and commenced practice in Lewiston. He was elected as an Anti-Mason to the 22nd United States Congress, and served from March 4, 1831 to March 3, 1833. Bates and Lathrop Cooke were partners of the Lewiston Railroad Company, which connected with the Lockport and Niagara Falls Railroad in 1835. He was New York State Comptroller from 1839 to January 1841 when he resigned because of his bad health. Subsequently, he was appointed a bank commissioner and died in office soon after. Azariah Cutting Flagg
Azariah Cutting Flagg (November 28, 1790 – November 24, 1873) was an American newspaper printer and editor, and politician. Early life Azariah Flagg was the second son of Ebenezer Flagg (1756–1828) and Elizabeth Cutting Flagg (d. 1838). At age eleven, he took five-year apprenticeship in 1801–1806 with his uncle, who was a printer in Burlington, Vermont. After learning and starting practicing trade as journeyman printer, he decided to try his fortunes in Plattsburgh, New York, where he arrived in October 1811. He married Phoebe Maria Cole in October 1814; she gave birth to two daughters, Martha Maria, and Elizabeth, and a son, Henry Franklin. Silas Wright Jr. (May 24, 1795 – August 27, 1847) was an American attorney and Democratic politician. A member of the Albany Regency, he served as a member of the United States House of Representatives, New York State Comptroller, United States Senator, and Governor of New York. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts and raised in Weybridge, Vermont, Wright graduated from Middlebury College in 1815, studied law, attained admission to the bar, and began a practice in Canton, New York. New York Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the State of New York is the trial-level court of general jurisdiction in the New York State Unified Court System. (Its Appellate Division is also the highest intermediate appellate court.) It is vested with unlimited civil and criminal jurisdiction, although in many counties outside New York City it acts primarily as a court of civil jurisdiction, with most criminal matters handled in County Court. John Savage (February 22, 1779 in Salem, Washington County, New York – October 19, 1863 in Utica, Oneida County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Early life Savage was born on February 22, 1779 in Salem, New York. He was the son of Mary (née McNaughton) Savage and Edward Savage, who served in the Penobscot Expedition and enlisted in Col. Samuel McCobb's regiment during the American Revolutionary War. He graduated from Union College in 1799. Then he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1800.
