New York City Gay Hockey Association
The New York City Gay Hockey Association (NYCGHA) is an LGBTQ sports league based in New York City. Jeff Kagan and Jeff Minck founded the NYCGHA in 1999, after playing on the same team without either realizing the other was gay. Kagan decided to organize the league after playing with the Toronto Gay Hockey Association, just as an NYCGHA player founded a similar league in Madison, Wisconsin. The similar organization in Chicago cites the NYCGHA as its inspiration. The NYCGHA describes its mission as providing "an environment free of harassment and discrimination for members and friends of the LGBT community to play ice hockey and fulfill their athletic aspirations." Participants need not be LGBT necessarily. About 30% of its players were straight in 2005, while 20% were lesbians. Half were straight in 2010. Chelsea Piers
Chelsea Piers is a series of piers in Chelsea, on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City. Located to the west of the West Side Highway ( Eleventh Avenue) and Hudson River Park and to the east of the Hudson River, they were originally a passenger ship terminal in the early 1900s that was used by the RMS ''Lusitania'' and was the destination of the RMS ''Carpathia'' after rescuing the survivors of the RMS ''Titanic''. The piers replaced a variety of run-down waterfront structures with a row of grand buildings embellished with pink granite facades. The piers are currently used by the Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment Complex. The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team based in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Toronto Fringe Festival
The Toronto Fringe Festival is an annual theatre festival, featuring un-juried plays by unknown or well-known artists, taking place in the theatres of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Several productions originally mounted at the Fringe have later been remounted for larger audiences, including the Tony Award-winning musical ''The Drowsy Chaperone''. Features The Toronto Fringe Festival started in 1989 and hosts over 150 productions every July. It is well known for not having a jury to judge which plays will be presented. Instead it uses a lottery system which gives each play an equal chance. It depends mostly on volunteers, donors/sponsors, and government grants.
