New York City Council Elections, 2013
Elections for members of the New York City Council were held in 2013. Primary elections were held on September 10, 2013, for all 51 districts of the city council. Many incumbents are termed out of office, while others were defeated in the primary, resulting in the largest turnover of council members since 2001, when 36 new members were nominated and elected to office in the council. Those who won their primaries without another contending party in the same district are considered the effective winner of the seat outright. New York City Council
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five Borough (New York City), boroughs. The council serves as a check against the Mayor of New York City, mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Members elected in or after 2010 are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year respite; however, members elected before 2010 may seek third successive terms. Helen Foster (politician)
Helen Diane Foster represented District 16 in the New York City Council, which comprises the neighborhoods of Morrisania, Highbridge, and Morris Heights for 11 years. She was the first Black woman to be elected within Bronx County. She served as the commissioner for the New York State Division of Human Rights from September 2013 until April 2019 and was appointed to the post by Governor Andrew Cuomo. New York City's 37th City Council District
New York City's 37th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Sandy Nurse, who took office in 2022. Geography District 37 covers a series of majority-Hispanic neighborhoods along Brooklyn's northern border, including a large swath of Bushwick as well as Ocean Hill, Cypress Hills, City Line, and small parts of East New York and Brownsville. Albert Vann
Albert Vann (November 19, 1934 – July 14, 2022) was an American politician and a member of the New York City Council from Brooklyn, representing the 36th district, which includes parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. New York City's 34th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It has been represented by Democrat Jennifer Gutiérrez since 2022.
