New York Air Show
The Bethpage Air Show is an annual American air show held each May on Memorial Day weekend. It is staged in the airspace above and off the coast of the Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, New York, located on Long Island. The air show is typically headlined by either the United States Navy Blue Angels or United States Air Force Thunderbirds. Due to cuts to the military budget, neither team appeared at the 2013 show, but the Blue Angels appeared at the 2014 show. All branches of the military are represented at the show. The 2020 was cancelled, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The USAF Air Demonstration Squadron ("Thunderbirds") is the air demonstration squadron of the United States Air Force The Thunderbirds are assigned to the 57th Wing, and are based at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Created in 1953, the USAF Thunderbirds are the third-oldest formal flying aerobatic team (under the same name) in the world, after the French Air Force Patrouille de France formed in 1931 and the United States Navy Blue Angels formed in 1946. Snowbirds
The Snowbirds, officially known as 431 Air Demonstration Squadron (french: 431e Escadron de démonstration aérienne, links=no), are the military aerobatics flight demonstration team of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The team is based at 15 Wing Moose Jaw near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The Snowbirds' official purpose is to "demonstrate the skill, professionalism, and teamwork of Canadian Forces personnel".Dempsey 2002, p. 567. The team also provides a public relations and recruiting role, and serves as an aerial ambassador for the Canadian Armed Forces. Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have fought and died while serving in the United States armed forces. Wantagh, New York
Wantagh ( ) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York, United States. The population was 18,871 at the time of the 2010 census. Wantagh is known as "The Gateway to Jones Beach". History The Wantagh area was inhabited by the Merokee (or Merikoke) tribe of the Metoac Indians prior to the first wave of European settlement in the mid-17th century. The Merokee were part of the greater Montauk tribe that loosely ruled Long Island's Native Americans.
