New York-style Pizza
New York–style pizza is pizza made with a characteristically large hand-tossed thin crust, often sold in wide slices to go. The crust is thick and crisp only along its edge, yet soft, thin, and pliable enough beneath its toppings to be folded in half to eat. Traditional toppings are simply tomato sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese. This style evolved in the U.S. from the pizza that originated in New York City in the early 1900s, itself derived from the Neapolitan-style pizza made in Italy. Today, it is the dominant style eaten in the New York metropolitan area states of New York, and New Jersey and variously popular throughout the United States. Regional variations exist throughout the Northeast and elsewhere in the U.S. History The first pizzeria in the United States, Lombardi's, was founded by Gennaro Lombardi in New York City's Little Italy in 1905, though this has recently been challenged by author Peter Regas. An immigrant ''pizzaiolo'' (pizza maker) from Naples, ...

Garlic Powder
Garlic powder is a spice that is derived from Dehydrated food, dehydrated garlic and used in cooking for flavour enhancement. The process of making garlic powder includes drying and dehydrating the vegetable, then powdering it through machinery or home-based appliances depending on the scale of production. Garlic powder is a common component of spice mix. It is also a common component of seasoned salt. Production Cultivation There are two types of garlic species: Garlic, Softneck (Allium Sativum Sativum) and Garlic, Hardneck (Allium Sativum Ophioscorodon). Hardneck garlic varieties are believed to have more flavour than Softneck garlics, characterized by a Pungency, spicy and more complex taste than other garlic strands. While Hardneck Garlics flourish in cold weather, due to their extensive time of vernalization, Softnecks seemingly grow better in warmer climates. Distinguishing between a Hardneck and Softneck garlic is done through the presence of a Scape (botany), scape (f ...

Crushed Red Pepper
Crushed red pepper or red pepper flakes is a condiment or spice consisting of dried and crushed (as opposed to ground) red chili peppers. This condiment is most often produced from cayenne-type peppers, although commercial producers may use a variety of different cultivars, usually within the 30,000–50,000 Scoville unit range. Often there is a high ratio of seeds, which are erroneously believed to contain the most heat. Crushed red pepper is used by food manufacturers in pickling blends, chowders, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, soups and sausage. Crushed red pepper in Turkey, served as a common condiment with very few seeds, is known as ''pul biber''. One specially prepared variety of it is the '' urfa pul biber'' (''isot''). Background Crushed red pepper, known for its spicy heat, comes with a range of ''capsicum'' peppers. Red pepper chilis originally start off green before ripening into an orange-red to deep dark red color and are best grown in the summer months—between ...

New York City Water Supply System
A combination of aqueducts, reservoirs, and tunnels supplies fresh water to New York City. With three major water systems ( Croton, Catskill, and Delaware) stretching up to away from the city, its water supply system is one of the most extensive municipal water systems in the world. New York's water treatment process is simpler than most other American cities. This largely reflects how well protected its watersheds are. The city has sought to restrict development surrounding them. One of its largest watershed protection programs is the Land Acquisition Program, under which the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has purchased or protected, through conservation easement, over since 1997. With all the care given, the city's water supply system is partially exempted from filtration requirements by both the federal and the state government, saving more than "$10 billion to build a massive filtration plant, and at least another $100 million annually on it ...
