New Taiton, Texas
New Taiton is an unincorporated community in northwest Wharton County, Texas, United States. The community is situated at the intersection of State Highway 71 (SH 71) and Farm to Market Road 961 (FM 961) north-northwest of El Campo, Texas. New Taiton is identified by road signs on SH 71 and FM 961. The area around the community is intensively farmed and several oil and gas wells are located nearby. History The community of New Taiton is described as being south of Taiton at the junction of SH 71 and FM 961. The area was first settled by Americans in 1886 but in 1894 it received an influx of Czech and German immigrants looking for farmland near El Campo. The community was first named Tait but it was renamed Taiton in 1896 when the first post office was opened. In 1901 Ignace Jurasek donated land for a new schoolhouse to replace the original one. The Colorado River is an approximately long river in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the 18th longest river in the United States and the longest river with both its source and its mouth within Texas. Its drainage basin and some of its usually dry tributaries extend into New Mexico. Taiton, Texas
Taiton or Tait or York was an unincorporated area in northwest Wharton County, Texas, United States. The one-time community was located north of New Taiton on State Highway 71 (SH 71). Taiton's population peaked around 1910 but then went into decline. At some time, Taiton either moved south to New Taiton or was replaced by that community. Unlike New Taiton, Taiton is not identified by road signs, not shown on maps and not served by any Farm-to-market road. The additional fact that there are very few homes in the area suggests that Taiton has become a ghost town. History Taiton is described as being located on SH 71 a distance of north of New Taiton. State Highway 71 (SH 71) is a Texas state highway that runs . The northern terminus is at US 87 and US 377 south of Brady and its southern terminus is at SH 35 near Blessing. This highway is designated the "10th Mountain Division Highway" from SH 95 to Interstate 35. History SH 71 was originally designated on August 21, 1923 from Austin to Columbus, replacing SH 3D and the western half of SH 3A. On June 8, 1925, SH 71 was extended to Midfield, though this was not effective until 1926. On March 19, 1928, it extended south to its current end.
