New South Wales Rugby Football League Season 1919
The 1919 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the twelfth season of Sydney’s professional rugby league club competition, Australia’s first. Eight teams from across the city contested during the season, with Balmain finishing on top of the ladder to claim the premiership. Season summary Balmain and Eastern Suburbs dominated the 14-round season, dropping just two and three games respectively. Balmain were undefeated after eight rounds but a mid-year Australian tour to New Zealand saw the black and golds lose their representative stars and their lead was lost to Eastern Suburbs for one week late in the season. With eleven rounds played, Balmain led Eastern Suburbs by one point on the ladder but relinquished this lead by losing their round 12 match against Glebe as Eastern Suburbs beat winless Annandale 28–0. Bill Kelly (rugby League)
William Martin Kelly (1892–1975), born in Westport, New Zealand was a rugby league football identity who enjoyed success in New Zealand and Australia as both a player and coach in the first half of the 20th century. He played for Wellington, the Balmain Tigers, New South Wales and for both the New Zealand and Australian national sides. He also had a long coaching career with five different clubs in the NSWRFL in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and with New Zealand in 1932. Early years Born in Westport, Kelly played first class rugby union for Buller when he was 18 and later represented Wellington. Playing career He began playing rugby union for the Westport Rivals club in 1909. In 1910 he was again playing for them and at the end of the season he was selected to play for Buller. Birchgrove Park is an urban park and sports ground located in Birchgrove, Inner West Council, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on the waterfront of Sydney Harbour. It is also the location of Birchgrove Oval, the headquarters of the Sydney Cricket Club from 1897 to 1947 and a historic rugby league football ground which served as the original home of the Balmain Tigers club. Walter Haddock
Walter Bede Dally Haddock (1890–1972) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s. Playing career Walter 'Fisho' Haddock played 13 seasons of first grade rugby league in Sydney. He started his career at the Annandale club, playing four seasons between 1910 and 1913. He then shifted to the Newtown club for two seasons (1914–1915) before returning to Annandale for four more years between 1916 and 1920, and he became Annandale's longest serving first grade player. When the Annandale club folded in 1920, Haddock played out his career at Glebe for three years before retiring in 1923. Haddock played for New South Wales on four occasions in 1912 and 1913. He also represented Sydney(Metropolis) on three occasions in 1913,1914 and 1919. Wentworth Park
Wentworth Park is a park near the suburbs of Glebe and Ultimo in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The park contains several muti-purpose sporting pitches, cricket nets and a number of fitness installations. There is a playground in the southern area of the park and seating for picnics. Public toilets are next to the sports field. In the centre of the park is the Wentworth Park Sporting Complex. History Wentworth Park was initially a creek and swamp, known from the 1830s as Blackwattle Cove Swamp. Between the 1830s and 1860s, various toxic industries were established along the shore, including, in particular, abattoirs and boiling down works.
