New River Rebels
The New River Rebels were a minor league baseball team representing Narrows, Virginia and Pearisburg, Virginia. From 1946 to 1950, the New River Rebels were a member of the Class D level Appalachian League, winning league championships in 1946 and 1947. New River hosted home minor league games at Ragsdale Field in Narrrows. The New River Rebels were a minor league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox in 1946. History Minor league baseball began in Narrows, Virginia and neighboring Pearisburg, Virginia, when the New River Rebels joined the eight–team Appalachian League in 1946. The league expanded from a four–team league, adding four additional teams in 1946, including the New River Rebels. The New River ballclub was founded by player/owner Shannon Hardwick. Narrows High School
Narrows High School is a public high school in Narrows, Giles County, Virginia, United States that enrolls students from grades 8 through 12. the school has an enrollment of about 290 students. Awards and recognition In 2013, Narrows was one of 194 high schools recognized by Working in Support of Education (w!se) with the Blue Star School certification. Harry Bushkar
Harry Bushkar Jr. (April 9, 1925 – September 1, 2008) was three-sport star at Virginia Tech (known then as Virginia Polytechnic Institute) in the 1940s, who went on to a short stint in minor league baseball. He was well known for officiating college and high school sporting events, and was commissioner of the western Virginia Football Officials Association. He was elected to the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. Early life Bushkar was born in Russia in a small town near Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). His family moved to the United States when he was a small child and he grew up in Logan, West Virginia. Robert James Bowman (October 3, 1910 – September 4, 1972) was an American professional baseball player. The native of Keystone, West Virginia, a right-handed pitcher, played all or portions of four Major League Baseball seasons (–) as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Chicago Cubs.
