New River (Santa Fe River)
New River is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map accessed April 18, 2011 tributary of the Santa Fe River in northern Florida, United States. The river was used as the border to create Union County from Bradford County (formerly New River County, Florida) in 1921. The Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail, a multi-use recreational trail that includes a portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail, will, when completed, cross the New River southeast of the town of Lake Butler. The Florida Trail currently crosses the New River along State Road 100. Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail
The Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail (PLB) corridor stretches nearly from the vicinity of Lake Butler, Union County, Florida, Lake Butler, Florida to Palatka, Florida. The project is located along the former Georgia Southern and Florida Railway right-of-way and the trail is being constructed on top of the existing abandoned railroad bed through (from east to west) Putnam County, Florida, Putnam, Clay County, Florida, Clay, Bradford County, Florida, Bradford, and Union County, Florida, Union counties. State Road 100 (SR 100) is a east–west highway serving northeast Florida. Its western terminus is at the Georgia-Florida border north of Avoca, Florida (its continuation in Georgia is State Route 11); its eastern terminus is an intersection with Shore Scenic Highway ( SR A1A) in Flagler Beach. The New River is a tidal estuary in South Florida, United States. Despite its name, it is not a river, but a channel composed of many tributary canals, The channel is connected to the Everglades through a series of man-made canals. After passing through Fort Lauderdale, the channel connects to the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean at Port Everglades cut. The Florida Trail is one of eleven National Scenic Trails in the United States. Bradford County, Florida
Bradford County is a county in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,303. Its county seat and largest city is Starke. History New River County, as it was known at the time, was created in 1858 from segments of Columbia and Alachua counties. It was renamed Bradford County in 1861 in honor of Confederate Captain Richard Bradford, who fought in the American Civil War and was killed in the Battle of Santa Rosa Island, becoming the first officer from Florida to die during the Civil War. During the county's early history, Lake Butler served as the county seat. However, the growth of Starke as an important city on the Fernandina to Cedar Key railroad led to an 1875 vote on the location of the county seat, with Starke winning by 46 votes.
