New People's Party–Civil Force
The New People's Party formed a political alliance with the Civil Force in February 2014. Both in the pro-Beijing camp, the Civil Force, formed by community leader as well as Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong politician Lau Kong-wah, had had a deep roots in Sha Tin District for decades and had been the largest political force in the Sha Tin District Council, having 15 District Councillors elected in the 2011 District Council election, while New People's Party which was established by Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee in 2011 was rather young, got only 4 of its candidates elected in the District Council election. During the 2012 Hong Kong Chief Executive election, Regina Ip decided to run for the office but failed to get enough nominations from the Election Committee. New People's Party (Hong Kong)
The New People's Party (NPP) is a conservative political party in Hong Kong. Chaired by Regina Ip, it is currently the fourth largest party in the Legislative Council. Established by former senior government official Regina Ip in 2011, the party aims at broadening the middle class and civil servant votes where the pro-Beijing camp had traditionally underperformed. 2012 Hong Kong Chief Executive Election
The 2012 Hong Kong Chief Executive election was held on 25 March 2012 to select the Chief Executive of Hong Kong (CE), the highest office in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), by a 1,193-member Election Committee (EC) to replace the incumbent Chief Executive. Won by the former non-official convener of the Executive Council of Hong Kong Leung Chun-ying, the election was the most competitive as it was the first election with more than one pro-Beijing candidate since 1996 election. Pun Kwok-shan
Pun Kwok-shan, MH, JP (; born 1961) is a Hong Kong politician. He is vice-chairman of the New People's Party and member of Civil Force. He is also a former member of the Sha Tin District Council for Tin Sum. Biography Pun was first elected to the Sha Tin District Council in 2003 in a three-way contest in Tin Sum for local-based Civil Force. He was re-elected in 2007 and retired in 2011. His seat was replaced by Lau Kong-wah, member of both Civil Force and the pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), who went on contest the ill-fated 2012 Legislative Council election in the newly created District Council (Second) constituency. New Territories West (NTW) is the western part of Hong Kong's New Territories, covering Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing and the Islands District. History Settlements in the area, except the Islands District, have been connected by the Castle Peak Road since its completion in 1920s, which also links Kowloon and facilitates trading. Michael Tien Puk-sun
Michael Tien Puk-sun (born 25 August 1950) is a Hong Kong politician, businessman and member of the Legislative Council for New Territories North West. He is the founder and chairman of the G2000 clothing retail chain and former chairman of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC). He was formerly a member of the Liberal Party, which was led by his elder brother, James Tien, and a member of the New People's Party. History Tien was appointed as the chairman of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) in December 2001 amid public criticism on his predecessor, K. Y. Yeung. He proposed and implemented administrative reforms that enhanced KCRC's transparency and accountability; he regularly attended Legco meeting and explained the company's policies and decisions. The District Council (Second) functional constituency () was a functional constituency in the elections for the Legislative Council of Hong Kong which was created in the 2012 constitutional reform package. It was the largest functional constituency consisted of registered voters who were not eligible for voting in the other functional constituencies. Background In 2009, the government put forward the reform package of the election method of the 5th Legislative Council of Hong Kong in the 2012 LegCo election. 2012 Hong Kong Legislative Election
The 2012 Hong Kong Legislative Council election was held on 9 September 2012 for the 5th Legislative Council (LegCo) since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The election was for the new total of 70 seats in LegCo, ten more than previously, with 35 members elected in geographical constituencies through direct elections, and 35 members in functional constituencies. Election Committee
The Election Committee is a Hong Kong electoral college, the function of which is to select the Chief Executive (CE) and, since 2021, to elect 40 of the 90 members of the Legislative Council. Established by Annex I of the Basic Law of Hong Kong which states that "the Chief Executive shall be elected by a broadly representative Election Committee in accordance with this Law and appointed by the Central People's Government (State Council)." It is formed and performs its selection function once every five years, even in the event of a CE not completing their term. The membership of the Election Committee was expanded to 1,500 under the massive overhaul of the electoral system in 2021. Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee
Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee (; ' Lau; born 24 August 1950) is a Chinese politician. She is currently the Convenor of the Executive Council (ExCo) and a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo), as well as the founder and current chairperson of the New People's Party. She was formerly a prominent government official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and was the first woman to be appointed the Secretary for Security to head the disciplinary service. She is also the founder and Chairwoman of Savantas Policy Institute, a think-tank in Hong Kong. Ip became a controversial figure for her role advocating the passage of the national security legislation to implement Hong Kong Basic Law Article 23, and after this legislation was withdrawn, she became the first principal official to resign from the administration of Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.
