New Orleans–Hammond Highway
U.S. Highway 51 (US 51) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that spans from LaPlace, Louisiana to a point north of Hurley, Wisconsin. Within the state of Louisiana, the highway travels from the national southern terminus at U.S. Route 61 in Louisiana, US 61 in LaPlace to the Mississippi state line north of Kentwood, Louisiana, Kentwood. After heading north through LaPlace to a junction with Interstate 10 in Louisiana, Interstate 10 (I-10) west of New Orleans, Louisiana, New Orleans, the highway joins Interstate 55 in Louisiana, I-55 on a twin-span viaduct across the Manchac Swamp Bridge, Manchac Swamp. The bridge, which passes between Lake Pontchartrain, Lakes Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas, Maurepas, is the second-longest bridge over water in the United States and serves as a vital hurricane evacuation route for the New Orleans metropolitan area. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is a state government organization in the United States, in charge of maintaining public transportation, roadways, bridges, canals, select levees, floodplain management, port facilities, commercial vehicles, and aviation which includes 69 airports, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The agency has approximately five thousand personnel on staff and an operating budget of $2.3 billion. DOTD operations are run through nine district offices across the state. The current DOTD Secretary is Shawn D. Wilson, appointed in January 2016 by Governor John Bel Edwards. Other functions of the DOTD are Dams (Dam Safety Program), flood control (Floodplain Management, water resource management (wells), and maintaining state-run ferries and moveable bridge status.
